CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Jeep Compass
overall

Summary
With 326 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $15,030.00, 21.2% of 2020 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Jeep Compass 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
70.2% of 2020 Compass models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Compass stands out most clearly for buyers who want a small crossover with real off-road ability. The test-drive data says that when maximum off-roading capability is the priority, it is one of the best choices in its class. It also frames the Compass as part of Jeep’s broader appeal, where the brand’s image and sense of adventure are a major part of the ownership experience.
At the same time, the 2020 Compass is described as comfortable and spacious, which helps broaden its appeal beyond trail use. The tradeoff is that its performance is fairly pedestrian and its value for money is poor, so it makes more sense for shoppers drawn to the Jeep identity and capability than for those focused on everyday efficiency or outright punch. Owner feedback generally aligns with that mix, with praise for affordability of features and urban handling, alongside complaints about limited headroom, rear visibility, and some safety-related concerns.

I got the Trailhawk version of Jeeps Compass lineup. I’m very impressed with the amount of features it came with, in fact, it’s very comparable to my Grand Cherokee High Altitude. Surprisingly, the Compass is peppy and maneuverable and it will do great as an urban 4x4!

How much does the 2020 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,515 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,512.42 |
| Year-Round High | $17,147.78 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,149 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.53% |
Prices have softened 9.53% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,902 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,512.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Jeep Compass earns 4.33/5 from owners and 6.33/10 from expert testing. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its features, styling, and handling, especially in urban settings. The review summary also points to affordability of features as a recurring strength, along with a generally satisfied ownership experience.
The trade-offs are clear: expert testing calls out fairly pedestrian performance and poor value for money. In context, that means you should like this Compass most if you want Jeep identity and capability more than you want quick acceleration or maximum everyday efficiency.
The market still shows meaningful demand, with 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also leans toward dependable-feeling ownership, with generally satisfied comments about the vehicle’s features, performance, and styling. The review summary does not point to widespread trouble-free durability language, but it does suggest that many owners feel comfortable with the Compass over time.
The expert test-drive notes reinforce that this is a vehicle built around Jeep character and utility, rather than a fragile novelty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the model’s compromises and optional-content dependence will leave you satisfied after the honeymoon period.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with a long option list. Pay close attention to body condition, repair quality, and whether the equipment on the window sticker matches the vehicle’s actual condition and features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk, and the base trim can leave you wanting if you expect the richer feature content and more upscale feel described in the higher trims.
- Powertrain: The 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, but the test-drive notes describe it as loud, slow, and thirsty, with a nine-speed automatic that can shift harshly.
- Safety package: Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is optional and bundled in the Safety and Security Group and the Advanced Safety Group; the test vehicle included adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning.
- Infotainment: Available Uconnect brings an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and 4G LTE WiFi connectivity, with SiriusXM Guardian available for extra-cost connected services.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 23.1 mpg, and the EPA combined rating cited in testing is 25 mpg.
Which 2020 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2020 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but you should only choose it if you are comfortable starting with the most basic version and building up from there, since the broader test-drive coverage makes clear that many of the Compass’s best features are optional.
- Latitude: This is the trim that makes the most sense for many shoppers because it moves you beyond the bare minimum while still keeping the Compass within reach if you want Jeep style without going all the way up the ladder.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of comfort, upscale touches, and available equipment; the test vehicle was a Limited with AWD and a long list of options, showing how far this trim can be pushed.
- Trailhawk: Choose this if off-road ability is your priority, since the test-drive data specifically ties this trim to added ground clearance, Active Drive Low AWD with a 20:1 crawl ratio, and Rock mode.
Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is optional across the lineup and bundled in the Safety and Security Group and the Advanced Safety Group.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and disciplined.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,902 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.53% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,512.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $15,515 sits slightly below last year's $17,149.
That decline suggests the Compass has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future buyers but can also limit how much value you recover later. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a more favorable price base than a year ago, but the model’s weaker value-for-money reputation can still weigh on resale momentum.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass safe?
The Compass earned Good ratings in all IIHS tests except for headlight performance, and NHTSA gave it a mix of three-star, four-star, and five-star ratings.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is optional and bundled in the Safety and Security Group and the Advanced Safety Group. When equipped, it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning.
The main caveat is that the systems do not always feel polished in use: adaptive cruise control can overreact in traffic, and lane-keeping assist can be more assertive than you may want. Headlight performance is also the standout weak point in the IIHS results.
Should I buy a 2020 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.53% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model stands out for its mix of Jeep image, available off-road capability, and a strong infotainment story, even if its value proposition is weak.
The bottom line: If you want the 2020 Compass specifically, it makes the most sense when you prioritize Jeep character, available trail capability, and a lower current asking price. If you are mainly shopping for everyday value, a different year or a different small SUV may make more sense, especially if you are price-sensitive and do not need the Compass’s off-road identity.
