CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Jeep Compass
overall

Summary
With 326 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $15,030.00, 21.2% of 2020 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Jeep Compass 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
70.2% of 2020 Compass models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Compass stands out most clearly for buyers who want a small crossover with real off-road ability. The test-drive data says that when maximum off-roading capability is the priority, it is one of the best choices in its class. It also frames the Compass as part of Jeep’s broader appeal, where the brand’s image and sense of adventure are a major part of the ownership experience.
At the same time, the 2020 Compass is described as comfortable and spacious, which helps broaden its appeal beyond trail use. The tradeoff is that its performance is fairly pedestrian and its value for money is poor, so it makes more sense for shoppers drawn to the Jeep identity and capability than for those focused on everyday efficiency or outright punch. Owner feedback generally aligns with that mix, with praise for affordability of features and urban handling, alongside complaints about limited headroom, rear visibility, and some safety-related concerns.

I got the Trailhawk version of Jeeps Compass lineup. I’m very impressed with the amount of features it came with, in fact, it’s very comparable to my Grand Cherokee High Altitude. Surprisingly, the Compass is peppy and maneuverable and it will do great as an urban 4x4!

How much does the 2020 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,577 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,585.96 |
| Year-Round High | $17,232.08 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,235 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.62% |
Prices have softened 9.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,962 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,585.96, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Jeep Compass earns 4.33/5 from owners and 6.33/10 from expert testing. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its affordability of features, urban handling, and overall styling. The Compass also fits buyers who want Jeep identity and a sense of adventure, while the expert review frames it as especially appealing if you value image and off-road utility over everyday polish.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and value for money is poor. That makes it a better fit if you want a small crossover with Jeep character and capability than if you’re shopping mainly for refinement or punch.
Only 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market rewards careful comparison shopping.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a generally satisfying ownership experience, with comments that align with a dependable-feeling vehicle that many shoppers can count on for everyday use. The expert review also describes the Compass as a decent tool for regular off-roading, which supports the idea that it can handle its intended role without drama.
Jeep’s performance notes also suggest the drivetrain is more about capability than sophistication, so long-term ownership risk for used buyers is less about outright durability claims and more about living with a powertrain that can feel rough and unrefined.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment you want is actually present, since many of the Compass’s best features were optional.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Compass comes in four core trim levels called Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. The base Sport can be a feature-light starting point, while higher trims and packages add the nicer cabin materials, premium audio, navigation, and other upgrades that make the model feel more complete.
- Powertrain: The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder makes 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, but the review says it feels loud, slow, and thirsty. If you care about everyday smoothness, this is the area to scrutinize most closely.
- Safety package: Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance tech is optional and available through the Safety and Security Group and the Advanced Safety Group. The included features can bring adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning.
- Infotainment: Available Uconnect brings an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and 4G LTE WiFi connectivity. It also supports connected services, and the system is described as intuitive and easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 23.1 mpg, and the review says that fell short of the EPA combined rating of 25 mpg.
Which 2020 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2020 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it makes the Compass accessible if you mainly want the Jeep badge and basic utility. It’s the trim where you’ll want to be especially careful about option content, since many of the model’s better features are not standard.
- Latitude: This is the trim that makes the most sense for many used buyers because it moves you beyond the bare minimum without pushing you into the highest-priced versions. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more satisfying mix of equipment and price.
- Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want a more upscale cabin and the kind of comfort and tech that make the Compass feel more premium. It suits you if you’re willing to pay more for a richer feature set.
- Trailhawk: This is the one to buy if off-road ability is your priority. The review highlights added ground clearance, an Active Drive Low AWD system with a 20:1 crawl ratio, and an exclusive Rock driving mode, making it the clear choice for trail-focused shoppers.
Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is optional across the lineup, so verify whether a specific used example has the safety package you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,962 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,585.96, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $15,577 sits slightly below last year's $17,235.
That price movement suggests the Compass has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. It also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment, since well-kept examples should stand out more in a market where many listings are already discounted.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass safe?
The Compass earned Good ratings in all IIHS crash tests except for headlight performance, and NHTSA gave it a mix of three-star, four-star, and five-star ratings.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep’s driver-assistance suite can include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning. Those features are optional, though, so you should confirm that a used example actually has the package you want.
The review also notes that adaptive cruise control can overreact in traffic and that lane-keeping assist can feel overly assertive, so test those systems carefully on a drive.
Should I buy a 2020 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 Compass stands out most clearly for buyers who want a small crossover with real off-road ability, especially if maximum off-roading capability is the priority.
The bottom line: If you want the Jeep image, available trail capability, and a used price that has already come down, the 2020 is the right direction to focus on. If you’re more price-sensitive and mainly want everyday transportation, you should compare it carefully against other small SUVs before committing.
