2020 Jaguar XE test drive
overall
With the freshened 2020 Jaguar XE, practicality takes a back seat to style, speed, and singularity.
With the refreshed 2020 Jaguar XE, the proudly British brand again attempts to make its mark in the compact luxury sport sedan segment. Unfortunately for Jaguar, this year’s updates don’t address all of its shortcomings, and people shopping for a car like this enjoy a wealth of compelling alternatives. Nevertheless, if you want something undeniably stylish and enjoyable to drive, and you don’t want to see the same exact car during every commute, the updated 2020 XE deserves consideration.

Reviewed a 2020 Jaguar XE on Dec 2, 2023
I believe the score has a nice features and a good price but the fact that it is a diesel turbo is cost for concern . There is a belt in the drivetrain of this car that can fail, leading to catastrophic engine loss. This is according to reviews that I have read online. It does not mean that this is a bad car, but it does mean that there are serious risks to ownership and extra caution and knowledge is required on the part of the owner.

Is the 2020 Jaguar XE a good car?
The 2020 Jaguar XE earns a 3/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating, which fits a car that prioritizes style and driving enjoyment over everyday practicality. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
It stands out in the compact luxury sport sedan segment because it is aimed at you if you want something undeniably stylish and enjoyable to drive rather than the most conventional choice on the road. The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and not much cargo space, plus unintuitive technology. If you value a distinctive design and a fun driving experience, the XE has a clear personality that helps it stand apart.
The market is moderately favorable, with 32.8% of listings priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Jaguar XE reliable?
The 2020 Jaguar XE is presented as a car with some ownership reassurance built in, but it still carries the usual caution that comes with a used luxury sedan. Jaguar’s Elite Care warranty, roadside assistance, and free maintenance programs help address reliability concerns, and the car’s performance notes suggest it is a solid compact luxury sport sedan rather than a fragile one.
The dependability picture is mixed in practice: the engine is described as pleasing, the steering is excellent, and the car can deliver strong grip and confident braking, but the chassis can feel stiff over sharper bumps and the cabin can creak on rougher roads. Jaguar’s maintenance perks help soften the ownership experience, especially if you are buying used and want some extra peace of mind.
Long-term ownership risk is still something you should weigh carefully, because the XE’s quirks and premium-car complexity can make it less forgiving than more conventional alternatives.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jaguar XE?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title does not guarantee a clean life. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the infotainment system, driver-assistance features, and interior condition, since the XE’s technology can be unintuitive and its cabin controls are part of the ownership experience. Also pay close attention to ride quality, brake feel, and any signs of creaks or stiffness over rough pavement.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup is simplified for 2020, with the XE P250 S as the likely choice for most shoppers and the XE P300 R-Dynamic S as the more powerful option. The P300 R-Dynamic S adds a more aggressive setup and is the version highlighted for its attractive 20-inch wheels and stronger performance, while the base setup is the more straightforward pick if you want to keep costs down.
- Powertrain: You get a 247-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in the P250 S or a 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in the P300 R-Dynamic S, both paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The stronger version is quicker and more engaging, but the car’s age is starting to show in overall refinement.
- Safety package: The standard package includes a reversing camera, a distracted-driver monitor, low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and front and rear parking sensors. Blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree surround-view camera are stand-alone options, while the Park Pack and Drive Pack add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear traffic monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking assistance.
- Infotainment: The XE uses InControl Touch Pro Duo, and the available 12.3-inch digital instrumentation is a highlight. Wireless smartphone charging is available, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but the system is still described as slow to load and not especially intuitive.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it should get 25 mpg in combined driving, and the test loop returned 20.3 mpg.
Which 2020 Jaguar XE trim should I buy?
The 2020 Jaguar XE is offered in 2 trim levels: XE P250 S and XE P300 R-Dynamic S.
Here's the short version:
- XE P250 S: This is the trim most shoppers are likely to choose, and it is the better-value path if you want the XE’s style and character without paying for the stronger engine. It starts at a lower price, comes with rear-wheel drive standard, and gives you the core XE experience with the refreshed styling and upgraded cabin.
- XE P300 R-Dynamic S: This is the one to buy if you care more about performance. It adds the 296-hp engine, standard all-wheel drive, and quicker acceleration, and it is the version highlighted as the choice for driving enthusiasts.
If you want the most complete safety setup, look for the Park Pack and Drive Pack, since they add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear traffic monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking assistance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jaguar XE?
This is a selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find a decent opportunity if the right car shows up.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 67 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 80.6% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2020 Jaguar XE safe?
The 2020 Jaguar XE has not been crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, so there are no official crash ratings to cite. It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance package includes a reversing camera, a distracted-driver monitor, low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and front and rear parking sensors. Blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree surround-view camera are optional, and the Park Pack plus Drive Pack add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear traffic monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking assistance.
There are also some caveats: the lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control systems were found to need further development, with inconsistent behavior during testing.
Should I buy a 2020 Jaguar XE or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- The refreshed 2020 XE is described as a car that makes a mark with its singularity, and it is aimed at buyers who want something undeniably stylish and enjoyable to drive rather than the most conventional choice on the road.
The bottom line: If you want the XE’s refreshed styling, distinctive personality, and enjoyable driving character, the 2020 model is the one to focus on. If you are more price-sensitive, you should still shop carefully and compare individual listings, because the best value will come from finding the right condition, equipment, and history rather than simply chasing the newest example.
