Summary
With 519 currently listed for sale and an average price of $49,440, 29.1% of 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD stands out as a heavy-duty truck that was redesigned for greater capability without abandoning its work-truck roots. It debuted as a 2020 model, grew by as much as 10 inches in length and 2.5 inches in height, and adopted a slightly larger, blockier grille. The changes were modest inside, but the truck’s maximum towing capacity rose sharply, with its most extreme case increasing by 53 percent. Buyers also got a wide range of cab, bed, and rear-axle configurations, which helped make the Sierra 3500HD adaptable for both jobsite duty and more specialized towing needs.
Power and equipment are central to its appeal. The 2020 Sierra 3500HD offered a 6.6-liter V8 with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, or a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, it could haul up to 7,442 pounds and tow up to 35,500 pounds. Even the base truck came with a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims added features such as the MultiPro tailgate, trailering assist technology, off-road hardware, and luxury touches like leather upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and a Bose audio system. For buyers who want a serious tow rig that can also feel modern and well-equipped, that combination is a major strength.
There are tradeoffs, though. The base model was intentionally sparse, and the truck’s size can make it unwieldy in parking lots. Top trims can also become very expensive, and the truck’s rivals typically can tow more. Even so, the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD remains distinctive for blending heavy-duty capability, broad configuration choices, and a more refined upper-trim experience than many buyers expect from a one-ton workhorse.

Besides the bells and whistles we grabbed this dually because we pull a toy hauler. We went from a sturdy 2500 Dodge Ram to this beauty. We choose the dually 3500 due to the pulling capacity and payload as toy haulers are heavier in front to compensate for the weight that you can put in the back. We have no issues pulling it now and the truck does not squat because the support of the 4 tires. Other friends have regular 3500 and still have issues with the payload and had to put in more money into their vehicle to beef up the suspension when pulling a toy hauler because the payload is less. YOU WONT REGRET BUYING ONE!

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD a good car?
Yes — the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its impressive performance when pulling heavy loads, along with its comfortable, well-built feel. The truck’s broad configuration choices and work-ready capability also make it a strong fit if you need a serious tow rig that can still feel modern and well equipped. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with owners describing it as well-built and strong over the long term. That kind of feedback matters for a heavy-duty truck, where you want confidence that it can keep doing hard work without becoming a headache. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the truck’s core reputation and more about how hard a specific example has been used and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus on a thorough inspection of the truck’s condition and signs of heavy use. Because this is a large, capability-focused truck, pay close attention to wear that could reflect towing or jobsite duty. It also makes sense to check that the equipment and trim level match what you expect, since the Sierra 3500HD can vary widely from basic work-truck setups to much more upscale builds.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?
The current average of $49,353 sits slightly below last year's $54,399.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper resale upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that value retention will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck has been maintained. Heavy-duty trucks can still hold demand well when they’re clean and properly equipped, but the current trend shows buyers have become a bit more price-sensitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned 2020 model year with strong owner satisfaction and a market that still offers some deal potential, this is the primary path to consider. If your top priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2020 remains the better pick when you want a newer-feeling heavy-duty truck with broad capability and solid shopper appeal.
