What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or a modified setup. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the way you plan to use it.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base truck comes with a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and LED “light blade” headlights. Moving up to the SLE adds an additional USB port, a WiFi hotspot, a larger 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry. The Elevation adds body-color exterior details, 20-inch wheels, black accents, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel, while the SLT adds many of those features with more chrome styling. The AT4 is the off-road-oriented version with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, black leather with brown accents, beefed-up skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, knobby off-road tires, and Rancho off-road shocks. The Denali adds chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging.
• Powertrain: The Sierra offers five engines, starting with a 4.3-liter V6 making 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. Other options include a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a Duramax turbodiesel 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. The 10-speed automatic routes power to rear-wheel drive or available 4-wheel drive, and the diesel is the most efficient version.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. The AT4 test truck came with many of these available features, so lower trims may not have the same safety equipment.
• Infotainment: The Base trim has a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SLE moves to an 8-inch screen. The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a USB port, and the text emphasizes clear graphics, large icons, sensible menus, and tactile controls. Wireless charging and a head-up display appear on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The AT4 returns 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. The most efficient version is the turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive at 23/30/26, while the 2.7-liter turbo returns 20/23/21 and the most efficient V8 returns 17/24/20.

Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, AT4.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the most affordable way into the Sierra, and it already gives you a V6, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, and LED headlights. It makes sense if you want the essentials and plan to keep the truck simple.
• SLE: This trim adds an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry, plus access to more option packages. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more modern daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Elevation: This one adds a distinctive look with body-color exterior pieces, 20-inch wheels, and black accents, plus heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel. It suits you if style and comfort matter as much as utility.
• SLT: CarGurus recommends the SLT trim. It keeps many of the comfort features you’d want but with a more road-friendly setup, including more compliant tires and suspension.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless charging. It’s the trim to consider if you want the most upscale Sierra experience.
• AT4: The AT4 is the off-road-oriented version, with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, and Rancho off-road shocks. It’s the right pick if you want capability and a more rugged personality.

Advanced safety features are not standard, so check carefully for the driver-assistance equipment you want.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,882 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.54% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $32,712, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $32,712 sits slightly below last year's $35,767.

That softer pricing can help you buy more truck for the money today, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you’re planning to sell later, the current trend suggests you should focus on buying well and keeping the truck in strong condition.

Trucks with broad appeal and strong equipment lists tend to hold buyer interest better, especially when they’re well maintained and accident-free. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera.

The AT4 test truck came with many of the available safety features, which means lower trims may leave some of that equipment off the table. That makes it important to check the exact build sheet if safety tech is a priority for you.

Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.54% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends truck utility with SUV-like everyday usability.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $30,876, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $32,712 average.
• It was completely redesigned and feels thoroughly updated.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $34,355, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $32,712 average.
• It adds unique features like an optional carbon-fiber composite cargo bed.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2020 is the primary pick.
