The current generation of the Cadillac Escalade was introduced for 2015. With a new generation of the Escalade expected soon, this year’s model carries over largely unchanged. The Lincoln Navigator and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class are among the most notable competitors in the full-size luxury SUV segment. The Escalade looks and feels solidly built, with an exterior that doesn’t apologize for the amount of space it takes up. The front end is dominated by a huge grille and the rear features distinctive LED lights that travel all the way up the hatch. Every Escalade comes fitted with a 6.2-liter V8 engine rated for 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard and 4-wheel drive (FWD) is optional. The Escalade can tow up to 8,300 pounds when properly equipped. Other standard features include magnetic ride control and a locking differential. With RWD, the Escalade is rated for 14 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 17 combined. With 4WD, the Escalade sacrifices 2 mpg highway. The Escalade can be configured to seat up to eight passengers and comes in four trims: Standard, Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Platinum. The Standard trim features 20-inch alloy wheels, wireless device charging, a 16-speaker audio system, and a hands-free power liftgate. With the Luxury trim, you get 22-inch wheels, a power sunroof, and a rear-view camera mirror. Platinum Luxury adds lighted door handles and a Blu-Ray/DVD backseat entertainment system. The Platinum trim gets an exclusive 22-inch wheel design, power-retracting side access steps, and dual backseat screens. An 8-inch touchscreen display comes standard, along with Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a WiFi hot spot. The Escalade has not received an overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Standard safety features include a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, the Teen Driver safety system, and a safety alert seat. Upgrading to Luxury adds rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-change alert. With Premium Luxury, you get forward automatic braking and reverse automatic braking. There’s a reason that the Cadillac Escalade has such a strong reputation in this category. It’s tempting to see what the next generation has in store, but if you can’t wait, the 2020 model brings plenty to the table.
