In 2015, with the introduction of its 4C, Alfa Romeo formally returned to the United States after a 20-year hiatus. This 4C, a light and nimble sports car, is currently available only as a convertible and carries over mostly unchanged for 2020. However, this model year sees the addition of the 4C Spider Italia, a limited edition of just 15 vehicles. Notable competitors to the 4C include the Jaguar F-TYPE, Porsche 911, and Audi TT.

The 4C Spider features curvaceous and exotic styling that helps it stand out amongst its peers. The carbon fiber construction isn’t immediately apparent, as Alfa Romeo resists the urge to use the carbon fiber weave as a styling element, but its benefits are numerous. The 2020 4C Spider Italia Edition gets an exclusive Misano Blue Metallic color, a piano black front intake and rear diffuser, and 4C Spider Italia graphics.

The 4C Spider is available with just one powertrain, but it’s a fun one: a mid-mounted 1.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed sequential-automatic transmission. This engine is good for 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The car's rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration and four selectable drive modes ensure an engaging driving experience. A sport suspension system is available. Fuel-economy ratings check in at 24 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined.

The cabin is simple, providing both occupants with leather upholstery and air conditioning. The 4C Italia version gets an aluminum dashboard insert with the special edition logo and a plate commemorating that vehicle’s number in the 15-model production run. The minimalist approach carries over to the infotainment system, which features a 7-inch display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, and an Alpine audio system.

The 4C Spider hasn’t been tested for crashworthiness by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard safety features include a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.

This convertible is still enjoyable to look at and to drive, and if you crave more exclusivity, the limited 4C Spider Italia may be just what you need.
