CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS
overall

Summary
With 222 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,901, 36.0% of 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLSs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS stands out first for its styling. Mercedes-Benz calls it its slickest sedan, and the third-generation CLS is described as just as striking as the original car was when it debuted. That visual drama is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want a luxury sedan that feels more distinctive than conventional.
It also brings major changes to its engines, tech, and style, which helps it feel like more than just a design exercise. The CLS is said to claim a lead among luxury cars with superior technology and powertrains, and it comes with standard advanced safety features. On the road, it is praised for its great ride quality, but it is not without drawbacks: the back seat is cramped, the technology is unintuitive, and it is considered poor value for money.

Great power with exceptional handling. AMG features (sports seats, steering wheel) are definitely worth the extra money. The infotainment is a bit outdated despite the controls being very intuitive, and sound system is top notch! I was looking at the A7/S7 and thought this was a much better option.

Great car. Its a mercedes so repairs are expensive and the CLS is a little impractical in the back seat. But its a blast to drive and smooth and quiet.

Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 8.17/10 expert rating point to a model that delivers strong appeal for shoppers who want something more distinctive than a conventional luxury sedan. The CLS is described as a striking, style-first luxury car with major updates to its engines, tech, and design, and it also brings standard advanced safety features.
The trade-offs are clear: the back seat is cramped, the technology is unintuitive, and value for money is weak. Even so, if you want a luxury sedan that feels special and rides well, the CLS fits that brief.
10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The CLS is presented as a well-engineered luxury car with a smooth, technically advanced powertrain and standard safety systems that work behind the scenes. Its hybrid-assisted inline-6 setup is described as refined, with little shake at startup and minimal vibration when stop-start engages, which supports the impression of a polished ownership experience.
The main long-term risk for used buyers is that this is a complex, high-end Mercedes with expensive options and sophisticated systems, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher option content or signs of prior bodywork. Focus on overall condition, electronics behavior, and whether the car’s advanced driver-assistance features operate as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The CLS is described as a striking, style-first luxury sedan with a lavish interior, but the base car still carries the core appeal through its design, ambient lighting, and upscale cabin materials. The main question is whether the equipment level matches the asking price, since the model is positioned as a high-end luxury car.
- Powertrain: The CLS 450 4Matic uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with an electric motor-generator and a 48-volt system, and it is described as smooth, refined, and capable of seamless stop-start operation. The AMG CLS 53 adds more output and a more aggressive character.
- Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds one of the best semi-autonomous systems in the business, with steering and braking support, lane changes when you hold the signal, and speed adjustment for curves, intersections, and ramps. Standard safety equipment already includes pedestrian and blind-spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alert, auto braking, and a driver-attention monitor.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and the instrument panel offers multiple display layouts, including map and driver-assist views. Onboard Wi-Fi and wireless charging are optional.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive CLS 450 is rated at 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined, while the 4Matic version is rated at 23/30/26. The AMG CLS 53 returns 21/27/23.
Which 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is offered in 2 trim levels: CLS 450 4Matic, AMG CLS 53.
Here's the short version:
- CLS 450 4Matic: This is the best-value choice if you want the CLS experience without chasing the highest-output version. It already brings the smooth inline-6 hybrid powertrain, the upscale cabin, and the core luxury and safety content that define the model.
- AMG CLS 53: Choose this if you want the more powerful, more performance-focused version. It adds a stronger engine setup and a more urgent character, but it is the pricier path.
The Driver Assistance Package is optional, so make sure you check whether a used example has it if advanced semi-autonomous features matter to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 225 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,820, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS's resale value?
The current average of $30,820 sits slightly below last year's $33,611.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the current pricing trend implies you should expect a softer exit than last year’s market.
The CLS also competes in a narrow luxury segment, and its strong styling helps it stand out. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS safe?
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS has not been rated by either NHTSA or IIHS, but it comes with a long list of standard driver-assistance and crash-avoidance features.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard equipment includes pedestrian and blind-spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alert, auto braking, a driver-attention monitor, advanced steering support, Car-to-X road warnings, and a system that can limit the effects of crosswinds. The available Driver Assistance Package adds semi-autonomous steering and braking, lane changes with the turn signal, and speed adjustment for curves, intersections, and exit ramps.
Should I buy a 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out for its striking styling, major engine and tech updates, and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive-looking version of this luxury sedan and you’re comfortable checking condition carefully, the 2019 CLS is the right target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible price, you can shop aggressively for a well-kept example, but you should still verify history and equipment before buying.
