Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a distilled take on the sports car idea, and Mazda’s updates for this year make it feel even more polished. Its biggest appeal is simple: it is fun to drive, with great handling and the kind of open-road character that turns ordinary trips into something more engaging. It also stands out as an excellent value for money, which helps explain why it remains such an appealing choice for buyers who want a focused, affordable sports car experience.
That focus comes with tradeoffs, though. The MX-5 Miata does not offer much cargo space, so it is not the most practical option for carrying gear or luggage. Even so, for drivers who care more about enjoyment and responsiveness than utility, the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata delivers a compelling mix of sharp handling, everyday accessibility, and pure driving fun.

Our hardtop convertible came fully loaded with manual transmission. Has the package, color, and version I wanted. Love the car, great performance and fun to drive!

The Grand Touring trim has many of the comfort features you’d expect in a more expensive/comfort focused car, which means there would be little friction driving it year round and for longer periods of time. The cabin isn’t incredibly quiet, which is to be expected, and it can be cramped (shocker, since the car is so small) but it’s definitely comfortable for what it is. The cornering is great and the pedals are responsive. A real joy to drive! You can get used ones for a good price with decent miles (~60k) and they get surprisingly good gas mileage for a sports car!

Great car for short guys (or gals). Best features - very nimble handling, decent acceleration, superb transmission and clutch, suspension design & materials outcompete most, great gas mileage, reliable / low maintenance, reasonable to insure. Weaknesses - storage space, headroom (you better be under 6 tall). Shop carefully and you may snag a clean 2019 (or later model) with the 7,500 rpm redline for 1/3 off the original dealers price - a good value. The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ come close, but lack the overall refinement of the Miata. The Honda S2000 is a better drivers car but unfortunately many of the S2000s have too many miles at this date. If you are looking for a fun, rational sports car, and are under 6 tall, the Miata is likely the best car for you.

How much does the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,115 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,675 |
| Year-Round High | $25,800 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,193 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.81% |
Prices are up 3.81% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 196 listings available, which suggests a relatively small pool of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, nimble handling, and cool design. They also call out its reliability and decent fuel economy, especially with the manual transmission. The trade-offs are familiar for a roadster: limited storage space and limited headroom. That makes it a strong fit if you want an engaging, affordable sports car and can live with the tight cabin and modest practicality. With 41.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value in the market.
Is the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many owners saying they can count on it for enjoyable daily driving. The expert evaluation also describes the 2.0-liter engine as smooth, refined, and eager to rev, which supports the impression of a well-sorted powertrain. Mazda’s ownership value pitch is reinforced by the car’s strong fun-per-dollar appeal. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical complexity and more about whether the car has been used hard or lived with in a way that has accelerated wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a car with a manual transmission or one that has been modified. Focus on signs of accident repair, wear from spirited driving, and whether the car’s condition matches its mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard convertible top gives you the cleaner, simpler look, while the RF adds a power retractable fastback roof and a more upscale appearance. The base Sport trim is the least expensive entry point, but it leaves you with fewer features than the higher trims.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder is smooth, refined, and eager to rev, with 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Mazda pairs it with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed sport automatic with paddle shifters.
- Safety package: The i-ActiveSense Package adds Smart City Brake Support, lane-departure warning with a beep or rumble choice, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Smart City Brake Support is also available separately, and the reversing camera is standard on all trims.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a 7-inch touchscreen, center-console controls, steering-wheel controls, and voice recognition. Bluetooth calling and music streaming, HD Radio, app integration, text messaging support, and E911 are standard, while satellite radio is added on Club and navigation plus a Bose premium sound system with headrest speakers come on Grand Touring.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual returns 29 mpg combined, while the automatic is rated at 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Club, Grand Touring, and RF.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the purest, least expensive way into the Miata experience. It gives you the core driving character and standard safety basics, but it is the trim where you feel the feature trade-offs most clearly.
- Club: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more focused, track-tuned feel and brings in the kind of equipment that better suits enthusiastic driving. If you want the Miata’s character without jumping all the way to the top of the range, this is the one to look at first.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the standard soft-top lineup. It adds the more upscale equipment and is the trim to consider if you want the Miata to feel a bit more polished for everyday use.
- RF: Pick this if you want the retractable fastback roof and a more distinctive look. It is the right choice if style and a more premium roof setup matter more to you than keeping the car as simple and lightweight as possible.
The safety package is available on the Sport trim, so if you want the lowest-priced Miata with extra driver-assistance features, that is the trim to target.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly when the right car appears.
- Deal availability: 41.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 196 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.81% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,675, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata's resale value?
The current average of $25,115 sits slightly above last year's $24,193.
That upward move suggests the market has remained willing to pay for this model year’s mix of driving enjoyment and value. For a future seller, that is a helpful sign because steady demand can support stronger pricing when your car is clean, well maintained, and documented. The relatively tight inventory also helps keep attention on well-kept examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata safe?
The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata does not have crash-test ratings to cite from the available data.
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda includes a reversing camera on all trims, and Smart City Brake Support is available. The i-ActiveSense Package adds Smart City Brake Support, lane-departure warning with a beep or rumble choice, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The main caveat is the car’s light weight, which makes avoiding a collision especially important in the first place.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 41.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.81% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 update brings more power, a broader rev range, and a more polished driving feel.
The bottom line: If you want the most polished version of this generation’s lightweight roadster formula, the 2019 is the one to target. It combines stronger performance, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still shows real demand. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2019 stands out as the sweet spot for buyers who care most about driving enjoyment.
