Lexus introduced the GS F during the 2016 model year in order to compete with muscle sedans like the BMW M5, Cadillac CTS-V Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG. It hasn’t had any major alterations since then, and continues into 2019 still unchanged.
Of course the GS F has the same body shell as the rest of the GS lineup, but there’s so much more to it. Things start off with an aggressive front fascia that features a full-height mesh grille and big air intakes beside it that force air into the brakes and through an opening on the trailing edge of each fender. All of the chromework on the other models has been replaced with gloss black on the GS F. At the back, you’ll find smoked-out taillights, a carbon fiber spoiler, and a unique stacked quad exhaust tip arrangement. Inside, you’ll know a GS F from its plebeian counterparts by the race-inspired front bucket seats with their aggressive stitching pattern, plus generous doses of carbon fiber in place of wood trim or aluminum on other models.
The GS F is blessed with a 5.0-liter V8 that makes 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque, letting it hit 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. Thanks to an optimized exhaust, the GS F’s V8 can sing all the way to 7,300 revolutions per minute (RPM). An 8-speed sport-optimized transmission and an advanced electronic torque vectoring differential (TVD) deliver power to just the rear wheels. Giant, fast-cooling Brembo brakes bring things to a quick halt if necessary.
As one of Lexus’ nicest cars, the GS F comes in one well-equipped trim. Standard features include painted wheels, LED headlights and taillights, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, a sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, dual-zone climate control with a smog sensor, 10-way power heated and cooled front seats, a race-inspired instrument cluster with a full-sized LCD, voice commands, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display with navigation. Options include a 17-speaker, 835-watt Mark Levinson audio system, premium wheels, orange brake calipers, and a color heads-up display.
Commemorating the tenth year of its F performance house, Lexus is offering a special 10th Anniversary Edition of the 2019 GS F, of which only 100 models will be available. This ultra-rare edition comes with matte-gray paint, 19-inch polished BBS wheels, and blue brake calipers. There’s plenty of blue elsewhere, too. The seatbelts, suede dashboard trim, blue carbon trim, steering wheel, console, and shift knob all get doses of the color.
It’s particularly important that performance cars are equipped as best as possible to avoid accidents, and so Lexus bestows the GS F with its full range of safety features as standard. That includes a reversing camera with guidance lines, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and full-speed dynamic radar cruise control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested the regular GS in 2018, where it achieved good scores.
The GS F is a super-sedan with a meticulous amount of care placed toward everything from its design to its driving dynamics. And, as one of the last naturally-aspirated V8 luxury sedans on the market, it’s a unique proposition.
5 Overall rating
(1 reviews)This is the reliable and comfortable super sport sedan that anyone can enjoy. The only thing wrong with it is that it is very expensive. GS F costs roughly $30,000 more than GS 350. That does include a Torsen rear differential, bigger brakes, powerful V8, and a few others but over $80,000 is too much.
