What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a lower-priced listing. Pay close attention to bodywork quality, alignment, tire wear, and any signs that the car has been repaired after a collision. Because this model is valued for comfort and features, you’ll also want to make sure the cabin, electronics, and driver-assist systems all work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment. The Limited trim brings the most upscale feel, including a premium audio system and additional features that make it the best fit if you want the most complete package.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 147 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s tuned for everyday commuting rather than excitement, and the driving modes can change the feel a bit, but not dramatically.
• Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit.
• Infotainment: Versions above the base SE get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. The Limited trim upgrades to an 8-inch display, and the Ultimate Package adds navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 32 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if your priority is the lowest purchase price and you’re comfortable giving up some convenience and safety content.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the core driver-assistance features that make the Elantra feel much more complete.
• Value Edition: This is a smart middle ground if you want extra comfort and connected-services perks without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Eco: Choose this if your main goal is efficiency-focused commuting and you want a trim that leans into economy-minded ownership.
• Limited: This is the one to buy if you want the most upscale cabin, the strongest tech package, and the most advanced safety equipment.

The safety-package upgrades are concentrated in the higher trims, so if driver assistance matters to you, avoid the base version.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.

• Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,321 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.55% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,415, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $11,659 sits slightly below last year's $12,477.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move the car quickly. The current range still shows enough demand to support reasonable resale, especially for cleaner examples with strong equipment and a good service history. Well-kept trims with desirable features should hold up better than rougher, lower-spec cars.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2019 Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit.

Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.55% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 stands out for its value-focused refresh and the turbocharged Sport trim’s stronger overall appeal.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $13,615, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $11,659 average.
• It adds free scheduled maintenance and new standard safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and plenty of inventory. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with added ownership perks, the 2020 is the better secondary path.
