2019 GMC Acadia test drive
overall
The GMC Acadia isn’t as large or spacious as some rivals, but it stands out with an upscale interior and solid driving dynamics.
Shoppers have many options when they want a family vehicle, but most look to the 3-row midsize SUV, rather than the minivan, as the de facto family hauler. But not all 3-row SUVs are created equal, and that’s a good thing because families have different needs.
Old-school, full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe might be overkill for getting the kids to soccer practice, but they're ideal when it comes to towing a boat or camper trailer while on a road trip. On the other end of the spectrum, a compact SUV such as the Volkswagen Tiguan is far more practical for cities and has an optional third row. For many families, that third row won’t always be occupied, so it shouldn't detract from other areas of the vehicle, cut into cargo space, or break the bank.
General Motors enjoys the luxury of multiple, somewhat overlapping brands and utilizes this overlap to offer two kinds of 3-row SUVs. The Chevrolet Traverse is one example; it feels like a stretched-out midsize SUV, almost like a downsized Tahoe.
The 2019 GMC Acadia rides on the same platform as the Traverse but feels like a completely different vehicle. It has a shorter wheelbase and a more upscale cabin, resulting in a midsize SUV that feels less like a family hauler and more like something special and unique.
But 3-row midsize SUVs compete in an extremely crowded segment against some of the most popular vehicles on the market, including the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9, and Subaru Ascent, just to name a few. So how does the Acadia stack up when it comes to balancing 3-row seating capacity and overall usability? Read on to find out and learn which trim of the Acadia CarGurus recommends.

So far nothing but love for this car. It works well with my growing children. 3rd row seat very accessible. Features are top notch. Highly recommend.

The GMC Acadia is a stylish, good looking SUV. I purchased the SLE-1 model which is kinda basic (no remote start, no heated seats) but good for what i need. BEFORE YOU PURCHASE ONE, be aware that the 2017-2019 (maybe more??) years have “Shift to Park” issues. You have the shifter in Park, but the car does not think its in Park. So the car will not shut off and you can spend 5-60 minutes playing with the shifter or pushing the shifter button until it thinks its in Park. Its a known issue for several GM models and there are no recall’s and no real definite fix. A lot of theories of what can fix it, but no for-sure thing. Just google “Acadia shift to park” and read up on it yourself. I’ve dealt with this on my 2018 Malibu and now after two days after buying a 2019 Acadia, i find out i have the same issue with this. Its still under warranty so i took it back and the dealer replaced the shifter. We’ll see if that is a permanent fix?? Frustrated to say the least.

This new 2019 is a very good looking vehicle, with a lot of options included. I think the value or price of this vehicle is a little high with the new 2021 vehicles coming out in a few months. This vehicle has everything that we are looking for. I think it is comparable with the Chevy Traverse, Dodge Durango, and Ford Explorer.

Is the 2019 GMC Acadia a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 8/10 from our experts points to a model that lands well with shoppers. The expert score includes an 8/10 for performance and a 9/10 for technology, and the model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Owners repeatedly praise the smooth ride, stylish design, and family-friendly features, while also calling out a spacious interior. That lines up with the Acadia’s role as a three-row midsize SUV that aims to feel more upscale and refined than many rivals, even if it is not as large or spacious as some competitors.
The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 26.3% of listings priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2019 GMC Acadia reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many shoppers can count on for a smooth, comfortable experience, with the main recurring concerns centered on third-row space and a frustrating shift-related issue in some models. The expert drive notes also describe it as a well-balanced daily driver with strong acceleration from the V6 and a composed ride, which supports the case for dependable everyday use.
If you are shopping used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid examples with unresolved mechanical or usability complaints.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 GMC Acadia?
At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and third row show wear that matches the mileage. Because some owners mention a frustrating shift-related issue, it is also smart to test all controls carefully during a drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SL covers the basics with 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, 7-passenger seating, remote keyless entry, 3-zone climate control, and heated power side mirrors. The SLE-1 adds signature LED headlights and Sirius XM satellite radio, while the SLE-2 adds a power liftgate, fog lights, heated front seats, and remote engine start. The SLT trims bring more premium equipment, and the Denali adds the most luxury-focused features.
- Powertrain: Two engines are offered: a 193-horsepower inline 4-cylinder and a 310-hp 3.6-liter V6. The V6 is the stronger choice, with quick acceleration, available AWD, and up to 4,000 pounds of towing when properly equipped.
- Safety package: Driver Alert Package 1 adds blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, and rear park assist. Driver Alert Package 2 adds low-speed forward automatic braking, lane-departure warning, pedestrian detection, forward-collision alert, adaptive headlights and high beams, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.
- Infotainment: The base system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with IntelliLink, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, five USB ports, and a WiFi hotspot. Higher trims add an 8-inch screen, and Denali adds navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 4-cylinder FWD setup returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined. The V6 AWD setup should return 17/25/20.
Which 2019 GMC Acadia trim should I buy?
The 2019 GMC Acadia is offered in 6 trim levels: SL, SLE-1, SLE-2, SLT-1, SLT-2, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- SL: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials without much extra flair. It works if you want the lowest starting price, but the equipment list is basic and the V6 is not available here.
- SLE-1: This adds LED headlights and satellite radio, but it still leans heavily on option packages. It makes sense only if you are comfortable building up the truck with extras.
- SLE-2: This trim adds useful everyday upgrades like a power liftgate, heated front seats, and remote start. It is a better value than the SLE-1 if you want more convenience without jumping too far upmarket.
- SLT-1: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it makes much of the desirable content standard, including the V6, an 8-inch screen, a Bose premium stereo, and more driver-assistance features. It is also the trim CarGurus recommends.
- SLT-2: This adds more driver-assistance features, heated rear seats, and front-seat memory settings. Choose it if you want a more fully equipped family SUV and are willing to pay for it.
- Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with chrome-heavy styling, navigation, a larger driver display, and more premium cabin touches. It suits you if upscale presentation matters most.
The safety-package trims add meaningful driver-assistance content, but much of it is still concentrated in the higher trims rather than the base models.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 GMC Acadia?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,405 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,477.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 GMC Acadia's resale value?
The current average of $17,479 sits slightly below last year's $19,363.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than assuming the model will hold its price on name recognition alone. Well-equipped examples with the V6 and desirable features should be easier to move than bare-bones versions.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 GMC Acadia safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Acadia comes standard with front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, and traction control. Driver Alert Package 1 adds blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, and rear park assist, while Driver Alert Package 2 adds low-speed forward automatic braking, lane-departure warning, pedestrian detection, forward-collision alert, adaptive headlights and high beams, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.
That safety content is strongest on the higher trims, so you should pay close attention to whether a used listing includes the driver-assistance package you want.
Should I buy a 2019 GMC Acadia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It balances upscale cabin feel with family-friendly practicality and solid driving dynamics.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,549, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $17,479 average.
- It gained wider V6 availability and improved handling, braking, and fuel economy.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,499, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $17,479 average.
- It adds bolder styling, a turbo four-cylinder, a nine-speed automatic, and updated technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, refinement, and everyday usability, the 2019 is the smart middle ground. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 can save you money, while the 2020 makes sense only if you want the refresh and are willing to pay more for it.
