CarGurus Analysis: 2019 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 307 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,005, 38.8% of 2019 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 BMW X5 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
83.1% of 2019 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 BMW X5 stands out as an all-new version of BMW’s midsize crossover, and its appeal starts with the way it blends car-like handling with SUV practicality. BMW’s original idea for the X5 was to create a vehicle that drove like one of the company’s sport sedans, and this generation continues to lean into that promise. The result is a luxury SUV that aims to feel more engaging on the road than many rivals while still offering the room buyers expect from the segment.
For 2019, the X5 is larger than the previous model, stretching 1 inch longer, 3 inches wider, and 1 inch taller. It also gets a new and bigger kidney grille with active shutters, along with a redesigned interior and an updated version of the iDrive system. Those changes give it a fresher look and a more modern cabin, and the added power and room help strengthen its everyday appeal. At the same time, the technology still lags the segment’s best, and the suite of Level 2 autonomous technology leaves a lot to be desired. Some drivers also noted concerns about electrical issues and the limited size of the back seat, which are worth keeping in mind for long-term ownership.

The car is a good value. I love all the features, the only must have that was missing was the seat massager and a few other accessories but overall love it.

Tires were worn down and even peeling off on the front right tire. Wheels are aftermarket. Car was clean on the inside, but nor on the outside and faded on plastic parts of vehicle. Compared to others like it, price was high for its condition.

Over the years, we have had an E53, E70, F15 and now a G05 xdrive X5. All have been fantastic vehicles to own. The new G05 is by far, the most technology packed one of the bunch. Great power, performance and handling make it a pleasure to own and drive. While expensive, the way the SAV looks and drives continues to outweigh the cost. Very enjoyable all around!

Drivers consistently praise its strong performance, luxury features, and comfortable ride, while the overview points to a vehicle that blends car-like handling with SUV practicality. That makes it especially appealing if you want a midsize luxury crossover that feels more engaging on the road than many rivals. With 38.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to a positive ownership experience overall, with praise for the X5’s luxury feel, performance, and comfort, while also noting concerns about electrical issues and back-seat space. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the X5’s strong engine-and-transmission combination and its smooth, well-sorted power delivery, which supports confidence in everyday use. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that some owners have reported electrical concerns, so a careful pre-purchase inspection matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 BMW X5?
At 74.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, electronics, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because some owners have mentioned electrical issues, it’s smart to test every major feature yourself, including infotainment, driver aids, and comfort equipment. You should also pay close attention to rear-seat space and overall condition if you plan to use the X5 as a family vehicle.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The xDrive40i starts with all-wheel drive, adaptive LED headlights and foglights, a panoramic sunroof, an adaptive suspension, heated front seats, a digital gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen, and a strong standard safety suite. The xDrive50i adds the V8 engine, real leather upholstery, upgraded multi-contour front seats, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. The xDrive40i is the better value if you want the core X5 experience without stretching for the V8.
- Powertrain: You get two turbocharged engines: a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder in the xDrive40i and a 4.4-liter V8 in the xDrive50i. The 8-speed automatic is a highlight, with smooth shifts and strong efficiency for the class, and the inline-six returns EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
- Safety package: The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The available Driving Assistance Plus package adds limited hands-off driving, lane keeping, lane changes, and traffic-jam assistance, but the expert evaluation says it is not very good at speed.
- Infotainment: The X5 uses an updated iDrive interface, but the technology is described as less polished than the best rivals. Available features include a 3D rear-view camera, gesture control, wireless charging, enhanced USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and automatic parallel parking through Parking Assistant Plus.
- Fuel efficiency: The inline-six returns EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
Which 2019 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 BMW X5 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive50i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the trim to focus on if you want the best balance of price, performance, and equipment. It already includes all-wheel drive, the strong turbocharged inline-six, adaptive suspension, heated front seats, and the core safety suite, so it gives you the essential X5 experience without forcing you into the pricier V8 model.
- xDrive50i: Choose this if you want the V8’s extra power and the upgraded standard luxury touches, including real leather upholstery, multi-contour front seats, and the Harman Kardon stereo. It’s the more expensive route, so it makes the most sense if performance is your top priority.
The standard safety suite is already strong on the xDrive40i, which makes it the best-value choice for most shoppers.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,877 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,932, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $24,932 sits slightly below last year's $28,323.
That decline suggests the X5 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and avoid overpaying now, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. Demand should remain supported by the X5’s strong performance reputation and luxury appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 BMW X5 safe?
The 2019 BMW X5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. One caveat is that the available Driving Assistance Plus package is described as underwhelming at speed, even though traffic-jam assistance works well. The brake-by-wire setup also has some unfamiliar feedback near the end of braking, which is worth noting during a test drive.

Should I buy a 2019 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out as an all-new version with car-like handling, a redesigned interior, and an updated iDrive system.
The bottom line: The 2019 X5 makes sense if you want the freshened fourth-generation design, strong performance, and a market that has already moved prices down. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years, but the 2019 is the better pick when you want the newer body style and a strong mix of driving feel and luxury.
