CarGurus Analysis: 2019 BMW 4 Series
Summary
With 823 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,318, 36.6% of 2019 BMW 4 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 BMW 4 Series 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2019 BMW 4 Series stands out as a premium two-door coupe and convertible that emphasizes style, strong performance, and a well-equipped cabin. It shares much of its mechanical hardware with the contemporary 3 Series sedan, but BMW gave it a lower, sleeker body, and the first-generation car also introduced the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a five-door hatchback version of the coupe. That combination of upscale image and practical variety is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want something more distinctive than a conventional midsize luxury car.
For 2019, the first-generation 4 Series had already received the 2016 engine update, so the lineup consisted of the 430i and 440i. The 430i used a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower, while the 440i used a turbocharged inline six with 320 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive was standard, xDrive all-wheel drive was available, and transmission choices were a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, apart from the 428i xDrive, which was auto-only. Even base models were well equipped, with standard features including 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats, and BMW’s iDrive system.
The 2019 model also benefited from the early 2017 update, which brought LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive. That fits the 4 Series’ broader character: it is enjoyable to drive, powerful, and generally well equipped. The tradeoff is that BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong, so a good service history matters.

I have a 428 GC and Im buying a 440 GC. The upsides of this car are the looks, handling, hatchback, and interior. The downsides are its expensive to buy and especially to maintain. Dont buy a 4 series unless you will have the money for maintenance and repairs. But overall, Ive been very pleased and would recommend these to others looking in this category.

Power and braking, excellent. Steering, poor (electric). Road handling, good but could be better.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,234 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,194 |
| Year-Round High | $20,606 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,596 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.62% |

There are 818 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for the 2019 BMW 4 Series, and it lines up with the model’s emphasis on style, strong performance, and a well-equipped cabin. The 4 Series also stands out for its distinctive coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe body styles, so you can shop for a version that fits your needs better than a conventional midsize luxury car. For buyers who want a premium car with a sporty character and upscale image, that combination is a strong fit. 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2019 BMW 4 Series is described as enjoyable to drive, powerful, and generally well equipped, but BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong. That makes maintenance history especially important when you’re evaluating a used one. For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying a car with deferred service or hidden repair needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 BMW 4 Series?
At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history before you go any further. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete maintenance documentation. Focus on overall condition, because a premium car like this can become expensive quickly if cosmetic wear or mechanical issues have been ignored.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 BMW 4 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 818 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,194, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $19,234 sits slightly below last year's $20,596.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car well maintained, you can reduce the impact of further depreciation. The strongest resale outcomes usually come from clean, well-documented examples that stand out in a market with mixed condition levels.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2019 is a good choice if you want the strongest mix of current pricing, inventory depth, and owner satisfaction in this range. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
