Wagons may be overlooked by most shoppers in favor of crossovers and SUVs, but automakers who choose to play in this segment are on top of their game. The 2019 Audi A4 Allroad, based on the popular A4 sedan lineup, is an excellent example. The 2019 Allroad carries over mostly unchanged, with minor updates to the standard and optional feature menus.

The A4 Allroad features classic, telltale Audi styling, such as high-end lighting and a wide grille, visually establishing this wagon as one of the most sophisticated on the market. The Allroad’s name is reinforced by elements like high ground clearance and contrast trim, which hint at the vehicle’s utility.

Seasoned Audi buyers might be surprised to find the A4 Allroad is offered with only one powertrain, a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated for 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) and Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The Audi Drive Select system comes standard and lets drivers select from Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Offroad, and Individual settings. The 2019 model has not yet received EPA ratings, but based on the 2018 ratings, drivers can expect 22 mpg city, 30 highway, and 25 combined.

Interior comfort and design is one of the A4 Allroad’s biggest strengths, with standard features such as leather upholstery, heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and, new for 2019, two USB ports in the rear row. Audi has some of the best infotainment technology in the segment. The A4 Allroad includes a 7-inch display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. However, the available upgrades are worth consideration. They include an upgraded infotainment system with an 8.3-inch touchscreen display and handwriting recognition, Audi’s virtual cockpit digital information display, a head-up display (HUD), navigation, satellite radio, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2018 Audi A4 Allroad with a 2017 Top Safety Pick rating and Good scores in all crash tests. Every Allroad gets a reversing camera, forward-collision warning, and front automatic emergency braking. For even better safety, consider adding blind-spot monitoring, rear automatic emergency braking, a top-view camera, automatic high beams, and side assist.

There are only a handful of wagons on the market for 2019, like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Volvo V90. This upscale wagon is a great choice for buyers who want something a little different without sacrificing features or comfort.
