2018 Audi A4 Allroad

For those who value the dimensions and utility of an SUV but like the looks of a traditional station wagon, the Audi A4 Allroad is an ideal package. Like a flashier and more luxurious Subaru Outback, the A4 Allroad’s high ground clearance and all-wheel-drive (AWD) platform allow it handle a variety of situations without being a dedicated off-roader. Since the current generation is only a few years old, the A4 lineup sees few changes for 2018.
The A4 Allroad is not to be confused with the original Allroader of the early 2000s, which was an overly complicated car that required frequent and costly repairs. Since 2009, the Allroad has been more strictly based on the standard A4 model, which has resulted in a significantly better vehicle. Updates for 2018 include a new Black Optic Plus package with black and red trim for the interior and exterior and a few new standard features that were previously optional. While pricing for a regular A4 sedan starts in the mid-30-grand range, the Allroad comes in at well over $40,000, and a loaded model can cost close to $60,000.
Unlike the rest of the A4 range, performance equipment for the A4 Allroad is fairly straightforward. It comes exclusively with AWD, Audi’s tweaked turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Predictably given its taller ride height, flared fenders, and extra weight, the A4 Allroad is the thirstiest of the A4 range, with fuel-economy figures of just 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined. The engine does, however, include an automatic stop/start feature for sitting in traffic.
Audi’s latest Quattro Ultra AWD system is a bit unusual for Audi, in that it operates the A4 Allroad in front-wheel drive (FWD) most of the time and only brings in the rear wheels when needed. Steering is by electric power assist, and the Audi Drive Select system offers Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Offroad, and Individual modes. With its taller, chunkier tires and elevated ride height, the Allroad provides a less sporty drive than its sedan siblings, but the differences are barely perceptible in normal everyday driving. It will be able handle some snow, mud, and sand, but any really tough terrain would be best left to a more dedicated off-roader.
With the rear seats folded, the A4 Allroad offers a fairly cavernous 58.5 cubic feet of storage space, and even with the seats upright it provides a decent 24.2 cubic feet with a standard power tailgate for easy loading. As for the rest of the interior, it has the same premium feel and impressive fit and finish as the rest of the A4 range. Leather upholstery comes standard, and for 2018 the front seats are heated. Also included are a tri-zone climate control system and a 7.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Premium Plus trims receive LED headlights, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and keyless ignition, while Prestige models add an 8.3-inch display screen with navigation, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, acoustic glass, a head-up display, and a top-view camera.
Like its A4 sedan sibling, the 2018 Allroad is a wise choice for the safety-conscious. Standard features include low-speed forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a reversing camera. A blind-spot monitor and rear automatic emergency braking now come standard on Premium Plus and Prestige models, and the Prestige further adds automatic high beams.
