How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 1.20% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 697 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space. They also commonly point to strong value for money, peppy acceleration, and a smooth ride.

For shoppers who want a roomy, mainstream midsize sedan with a little more character, the Passat fits that brief well. 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for the car’s comfort and everyday usability. On the expert side, the Passat is described as a competitive option that should remain easy to live with over the long term, especially thanks to its smooth power delivery and straightforward automatic transmission.

Volkswagen also notes that the base S trim can be equipped with a driver-assistance package that adds useful safety tech for a modest cost. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by age or prior damage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition details that matter in a used midsize sedan: interior wear, tire condition, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks App-Connect for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add features like heated seats, a larger touchscreen, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and more upscale materials.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the GT adds a 3.6-liter V6 with 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 4-cylinder is the efficiency play, and the V6 is the stronger choice if you want more punch.
• Safety package: The available Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
• Infotainment: Most trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the base S does not. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the S and a 6.3-inch touchscreen on the R-Line, with an 8-inch setup available through the Technology Package.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The V6 returns 19/28/22.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value starting point if you want the lowest entry price and can live without App-Connect. It still gives you the core comfort and convenience features, and the available Driver Assistance package adds important safety tech for relatively little money.
• R-Line: This trim adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. It’s a good step up if you want more equipment without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control while keeping the lineup’s practical focus.
• SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with real leather, a Fender stereo, memory seating, and available V6 power. It’s the most feature-rich trim, but it also sits at the top of the price range.
• GT: This is the enthusiast pick, with the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches. It’s the trim to buy if you want the most character and the strongest performance.

The safety package is available on the base S, but adaptive cruise control is not offered there.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 697 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,942, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $12,385 sits slightly below last year's $12,536.

That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Still, the Passat’s pricing remains fairly stable within its yearly range, which points to steady demand rather than sharp depreciation swings.

If you keep the car in good condition and choose a well-equipped trim, you should have a better chance of holding value than if you buy a stripped, less desirable example. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The Passat earns a five-star overall crash rating from NHTSA, but it also receives Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and in headlight testing, which keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. Volkswagen also offers a driver-assistance package on the base S trim with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is reserved for the SEL Premium.

The main caveat is that the IIHS headlight and passenger-side small-overlap results are weaker than you’d want, so you should pay close attention to trim, lighting equipment, and overall condition when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen added an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,683, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,385 average.
• The 2017 adds standard smartphone integration and safety tech across higher trims.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced Passat with more power and a more interesting GT option, the 2018 is the stronger pick. If your priority is saving money and you still want a roomy, comfortable sedan with useful standard tech, the 2017 is the smarter value play.
