Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, family-friendly features, and ample cargo space, and they also like the easy-to-use tech such as Apple CarPlay. That lines up with the Atlas’s role as a three-row SUV built for comfort, utility, and long road trips rather than flash. There are 35.4% good or great deals in the market, which suggests you can still find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?

Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily family use, with owners repeatedly highlighting its spacious cabin, family-friendly layout, and easy-to-live-with tech. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Atlas’s solid build quality and practical design, which supports the case for steady ownership. Volkswagen’s extended, transferrable bumper-to-bumper warranty also helps offset some of the usual used-car uncertainty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some desirable features are concentrated in higher trims, so you’ll want to make sure the specific vehicle you choose has the equipment and condition you expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the Atlas is a family SUV, condition matters not just for cosmetics but also for how well the cabin, electronics, and safety systems have held up. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on maintenance records, tire wear, and whether the features you want are present on the exact trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim starts with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, while the SEL Premium adds a long list of upscale equipment including 20-inch wheels, real leather upholstery, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrumentation, embedded navigation, a 12-speaker Fender audio system, self-steering parking assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with front and rear parking sensors. The SEL Premium is also the only Atlas with heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, ambient cabin lighting, automatic high-beam headlights, LED taillights, and folding side mirrors with puddle lights.
• Powertrain: The Atlas is offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6-liter V6, both paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is the only engine available at launch, while the 2.0-liter turbo is described as the later addition.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera. Depending on trim, you can also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The base Atlas S does not get the multiple-view reversing camera.
• Infotainment: The SEL Premium gets the Discover Media system with embedded navigation and Car-Net Guide & Inform services, plus Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation notes an EPA estimate of 19 mpg in combined driving for the SEL Premium, and observed results of 18.2 mpg on a test loop and 17.3 mpg over a week and 650 miles.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Atlas trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basic Atlas formula with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Atlas, but you should expect fewer convenience and safety features than the higher trims.
• SE: This trim is the first step up from the base model and is a better fit if you want more equipment without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It’s the kind of trim that should appeal to value-focused shoppers who want a more complete family SUV.
• SEL: This is the trim to target if you want a stronger balance of equipment and price. It sits in the middle of the lineup and is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful content without the premium jump of the SEL Premium.
• SEL Premium: This is the fully loaded version, with the most upscale cabin features, the best audio system, embedded navigation, and the most advanced parking and camera tech. It’s the right pick if you want the most feature-rich Atlas and are willing to pay for it.

Safety-package availability varies by trim, and the base Atlas S misses some of the camera and driver-assistance content found higher up the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,490 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.37% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,220, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas's resale value?

The current average of $14,220 sits slightly below last year's $16,416.

That decline suggests the Atlas has become more affordable for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s lower average, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The market still appears active enough that well-kept examples should remain sellable, especially if they have the right trim and equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas safe?

The Atlas earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera, and higher trims add more advanced driver-assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The base Atlas S misses some of the camera functionality available on higher trims, so you should check the exact equipment list on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.37% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 Atlas stands out for its spacious three-row layout, practical family focus, and strong utility-first character.

The bottom line: If you want a roomy, family-oriented Atlas and you’re shopping on value, the 2018 is a sensible place to start because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples with the equipment you want, since trim differences matter a lot on this model year.
