Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Outback stands out as a safe, affordable, and capable choice for drivers who want one vehicle that can handle a wide range of situations. It is described as an excellent answer to the question of what to drive just about anywhere at just about any time, which captures its broad appeal. As one of the original crossover SUVs, it also has a distinctive place in the segment’s history.
What makes the Outback especially notable is that it combines car-like driving dynamics and good fuel economy with all-wheel drive and lots of ground clearance. That mix helped separate it from truck-based SUVs, and it remains a big part of its appeal. Owners also praise the smooth ride, strong safety features, and ample cargo space. Some drawbacks are worth noting, though, including complaints about the navigation and infotainment systems and mentions of limited interior lighting for nighttime driving.

I bought the Premium model as a replacement for my 2012 Outback. My 2018 has navigation and moon roof. Car is awesome. Drives and shifts more smoothly than the older one. Not that much acceleration getting on the freeway but adequate. I like all the safety features (blind spot detection, back up camera, lane detection, etc.). Ill be keeping this car until self-driving cars are the standard.

Just bought a 2018 Outback Touring. It is quiet, smooth ride, the V6 has the power that V4 versions lack, which means I would never buy the smaller engine. Love the larger screen on the navigation system. The safety features actually saved us money on our auto insurance and we are paying less for the 2018 Outback than the 2012 Accord V6 we own. The visibility is another great aspect of the Outback. Getting into and out of the Outback is much easier with its higher clearance. While I have only had it a short time, I have really enjoyed driving it and look forward to learning about all the new features available.

There are 2,425 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $16,067.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Subaru Outback earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, strong safety features, and ample cargo space. The Outback also fits well if you want one vehicle that can handle a wide range of situations, with all-wheel drive and lots of ground clearance supporting its all-weather, all-purpose appeal.
The market also shows 25.7% of listings as good or great deals, which adds to the case for shopping carefully and comparing examples.
Is the 2018 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people tend to trust and keep, with repeated praise for its smooth ride, strong safety features, and practical cargo space. That kind of durable, everyday usefulness is the sort of thing buyers often associate with a dependable long-term ownership experience.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Outback is built for broad usefulness, with all-wheel drive, good fuel economy, and a comfortable, capable setup that suits daily driving and rough-weather use. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that it remains comfortable for hours behind the wheel and especially useful in snowstorms or on poor pavement.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-used example may have accumulated wear in the systems that make it so versatile, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Subaru Outback?
At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the vehicle’s features work as expected in real-world use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim comes with standard all-wheel drive and a CVT, while the Premium, Limited, and Touring trims add more equipment. The EyeSight package is a meaningful upgrade because it adds the company’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, along with navigation.
- Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder makes 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.6-liter 6-cylinder makes 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The 6-cylinder is the stronger choice if you want more passing power.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keeping assist. It is available on every Outback except the base trim.
- Infotainment: Starlink is available with an 8-inch display, faster start-up and response times, better voice recognition, new on-screen applications, and over-the-air software updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, while the 3.6R is expected to get 22 mpg. In testing, the 2.5i returned 21.9 mpg on one loop.
Which 2018 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2018 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: base, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 3.6R Limited, 3.6R Touring.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and standard all-wheel drive, but it does not get EyeSight. If you care about safety tech, you’ll likely want to move up.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it balances price and equipment well, and the cost-effectiveness guidance specifically recommends it with the optional EyeSight package.
- 2.5i Limited: This trim adds more comfort and refinement, and it also benefits from the cabin and exterior updates for 2018. It makes sense if you want a more upscale feel without stepping into the 6-cylinder models.
- 2.5i Touring: This is the most fully equipped 2.5-liter trim, so it suits you if you want the most features without changing engines.
- 3.6R Limited: If you want the 6-cylinder engine, this is the minimum trim you need to choose. It is the right pick if stronger power matters more than keeping the price down.
- 3.6R Touring: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the strongest engine plus the most upscale equipment.
EyeSight is available on every Outback except the base trim, so that safety-package gap is the key trim-level difference to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,425 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.05% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,067.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $16,085 sits slightly below last year's $17,306.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who pays closer to the top of the range.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Subaru Outback safe?
This vehicle gets five-star ratings across the board from the federal government, except for rollover resistance, which rates four stars due to the Outback’s raised suspension. Furthermore, the Outback gets a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it is available on every Outback except the base trim. It includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keeping assist, and Subaru also offers reverse automatic braking.
The rollover-resistance caveat is worth keeping in mind, especially because the Outback’s raised suspension is part of what gives it its capability.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model year brings updated bumpers, lights, grille, side mirrors, and a quieter cabin.
The bottom line: If you want a proven Outback with strong safety, broad usefulness, and a lower current price than a year ago, the 2018 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples and the trims that give you the safety and equipment you want without paying for more engine or luxury content than you need.
