CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Land Rover Discovery

Summary
With 366 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,165, 35.8% of 2018 Land Rover Discoverys for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Land Rover Discovery 4.43 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Land Rover Discovery stands out as a three-row midsize SUV that blends luxury with genuine off-road ability. It was part of the fifth-generation Discovery, which debuted in the U.S. in the 2017 model year and marked the return of the Discovery name after a 12-year absence. This generation moved to a smoother exterior and unibody construction, yet it still proved capable of towing heavy loads and handling difficult terrain. It also improved on-road manners and used more technology to make off-roading easier, while the cabin adopted a sleek, upscale look with fewer physical buttons and more touchscreen-based controls.
For 2018, the Discovery carried over the same basic formula with a choice of engines and standard four-wheel drive. The available powertrains were a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, or a V6 turbodiesel with 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Both were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and properly equipped, the gas engine could tow up to 8,200 lbs while the diesel was rated at 7,700 lbs. Standard equipment on the SE included two rows of seats with an available third row, a power liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. Higher trims added features such as a 10-inch touchscreen, Meridian audio, air suspension, power-folding third-row seats, heated first- and second-row seats, and a two-speed transfer case.
That mix of capability and comfort is a big part of the Discovery’s appeal, and owners often praise its spaciousness, luxurious materials, and overall comfort. At the same time, the model is not without drawbacks: the source notes poor on-road handling, weak performance, and infotainment that can be slow and distracting. Some owners also report reliability concerns, including issues with the sunroof and radio, which can matter more for buyers planning to keep the vehicle long term.

I have heard and seen all the bad Land Rovers have to offer but my Discovery has been very reliable an hasnt had a single issue yet. I stay on top of preventative maintenance and its never let me down. I would highly recommend a disco over a RR sport or any other vehicle LR offers.

Coming from an X5 the driving experience is entirely different and that’s ok. The sacrifice of sporty handling is more than made up for by far more storage and practicality. I wasn’t looking for an Escalade or Navigator, this is the perfect blend between mid-size and full-size. Materials are really exceptional in Hse-Lux models.

Wound up purchasing 2018 Discovery HSE Certified pre-owned. Have a couple thousand miles on it, and Im enjoying it so far. Coming from a previous generation Bmw X5 there are definitely differences. This car rides more similarly to an Escalade or Navigator. The taller body, higher seating position and slightly wider and longer body make the driving experience very soft and airy. The tech is fairly good and materials are exceptional. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for something not as large as the Escalade family, but slightly bigger than the GLE or X5. The car is definitely about comfort and not sport.

Is the 2018 Land Rover Discovery reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

At the same time, some owners mention trouble with the sunroof and radio, so long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully if you plan to keep the vehicle for years.

If you find a listing below $16,145, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Land Rover Discovery's resale value?
The current average of $16,145 sits slightly below last year's $18,313.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you sell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition so you have less depreciation to absorb later. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Land Rover Discovery or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,182, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,145 average.
- It offers a broader value proposition with strong room, luxury touches, and real off-road ability.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2018 is the stronger primary target because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2017 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
