CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Jeep Compass
overall

Summary
With 127 currently listed for sale near San Antonio, TX and an average price of $6,995.00, 26.0% of 2018 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Jeep Compass 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
66.1% of 2018 Compass models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Jeep Compass stands out in the crowded small-SUV field by offering plenty of versatility and the ability to venture where few other compact crossovers dare. It is also positioned in an unusual spot on the pricing spectrum: although it is technically listed as a compact SUV, it costs less than any other vehicle in the segment and sits between compact SUVs and subcompact SUVs in terms of pricing and other statistics. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a more affordable SUV with a stronger sense of capability than many rivals.
As the sophomore year of the second generation, the 2018 model continues the Compass’s newer direction after replacing an outgoing vehicle that had been around for a decade. Owners commonly praise its smooth ride, numerous features, value for money, 4x4 capability, and interior upgrades. At the same time, the Compass is not without drawbacks, with many drivers noting that it lacks power and could use more acceleration, while some also mention blind spots and the absence of turbo-charged options.

This car is just what we were looking for. It is loaded with options and is a great value. I would recommend others to consider it when looking for a SUV.

The fact that this car has more features than newer models due to the specific package of this one, I highly recommend! I have wanted this specific color for exterior and interior for a while, but was even more pleasantly surprised when it came with a panoramic sunroof, Apple CarPlay, Remote start and more. Very happy and think anyone else would love this car as well, even though it is an older model.

This vehicle is the limited trim and has more features than I was expecting. I have researched and compared it to the Subaru Forester, the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Rav 4 and for the price, it was the best deal. It is a very smooth ride and very comfortable, not to mention sporty looking.

Is the 2018 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2018 Jeep Compass earns a 4.36/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, value for money, and 4x4 capability, while also highlighting the interior upgrades and feature content. The Compass also fits buyers who want a compact SUV with a stronger sense of capability than many rivals, especially if you value its upright driving position and Jeep styling.
With 26.9% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
In owner feedback, the Compass is repeatedly described as a vehicle people appreciate for its value, smooth ride, and 4x4 capability, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable daily driver when maintained well. The expert drive notes also describe it as well rounded and very well suited for daily use, with a ride that soaks up bumps and a drivetrain that handles city and suburban driving confidently.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the drivetrain has aged, since long-term ownership risk is best managed by verifying condition before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Jeep Compass?
At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with off-road use. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the drivetrain and electronics operate cleanly under normal driving.

You can get front-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive, with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic on FWD models and an optional 9-speed automatic with 4WD on Sport and Latitude.

Which 2018 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2018 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Compass experience with the reversing camera, push-button start, Bluetooth, 6 speakers, and the 5-inch Uconnect screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you’ll miss some of the nicer convenience and tech upgrades found higher up.
- Latitude: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like automatic headlights, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, ambient lighting, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. If you want a more polished cabin without jumping all the way to luxury pricing, this is the trim to target.
- Trailhawk: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused Compass. It adds skid plates, off-road tires, unique wheels, tow hooks, and the Rock Mode with Hill Descent Control, so it’s the clear pick if capability matters most.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice, with leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect display. It suits you best if comfort and cabin features matter more than price.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the available driver-assistance features are still worth checking on any used example.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,174 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,624.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $13,674 sits slightly below last year's $14,722.
That softer pricing suggests the Compass has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a seller, that means your best outcome will likely come from choosing a clean, well-equipped example and keeping it in strong condition.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Jeep Compass safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Compass comes standard with 7 airbags, all-speed traction control, stability control, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, hill-start assist, rain brake assist, electronic roll mitigation, electronic stability control, hill descent control, a reversing camera with active guidelines, and a trailer-sway damping system. Available safety tech includes forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and Park Sense.
You should still check whether a used example has the available driver-assistance features you want, since some of them were optional rather than standard.
Should I buy a 2018 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model continues the second-generation Compass with a more polished interior, strong feature content, and genuine 4x4 capability.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,264, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $13,674 average.
- It offers legitimate off-roading capability in a compact crossover package.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Compass with stronger feature content and a more modern feel, the 2018 is the safer default. If your budget is tighter and you mainly care about Jeep character and off-road ability, the 2017 can still make sense as a lower-cost alternative.
