CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT
overall

Summary
With 182 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,345, 37.4% of 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
62.1% of 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT stands out as Hyundai’s most competent hatchback to date, and it is presented as a strong small-car alternative for buyers who want something more versatile than a sedan. Its hatchback layout gives it more usable cargo space than a sedan while preserving sporty driving dynamics and fuel efficiency that you lose with a crossover. It also fits into the appealing middle ground of enjoyability, affordability, and practicality, which makes it easy to see why it would attract daily-driver shoppers.
What makes this model especially distinctive is that Hyundai’s earlier hatchback efforts are described as feeling more like an afterthought, while the 2018 Elantra GT is portrayed as a fully developed standout. That gives it a more serious identity than the brand’s previous hatchback attempts and positions it as a credible competitor to the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus hatch, and Subaru Impreza wagon. Owners also tend to praise its handling, comfort, value, and city driving manners, along with its sporty hatchback design.
There are limits to keep in mind, though. Some drivers report that acceleration can be lacking, especially at higher speeds. Even so, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT’s blend of practicality, value, and enjoyable everyday driving is what makes it distinctive.

Acceleration is lacking but, overall, performance, comfort, mileage are good! Price was fair. Would recommend as a city car.

Base Elantra has good pick up 0-40 mph, but after 40 it strains. Base model is a good handling car and good value if buying it cheap. But new - people should opt for the turbo.. 2-3k more but includes better interior, push button, and way faster engine.

This car is great! I just need a small car, and prefer the versatility and sportiness of a hatchback. So far, seems to be a step up from my Ford Focus.

Owners consistently praise its handling, comfort, and value for money, and they also like its fun driving experience and sporty hatchback design. What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT?
At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition details that matter most in a hatchback: cargo-area wear, suspension feel, brake condition, and whether the electronics and driver aids work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a USB port, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 60/40 split-fold rear bench seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, and manually adjustable front seats. The Sport adds LED head- and taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, heated front seats, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The Base uses a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 161 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The Sport uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four with 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or an optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
- Safety package: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are optional on the Base but standard on the Sport. The Sport is also available with forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning, while the Base does not get those options.

Which 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is offered in 2 trim levels: Base and Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the core hatchback formula at the lowest entry price. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a rear camera, and a practical cabin, plus the Base is described as a refined, dependable daily driver. It’s the trim to target if you care most about affordability and everyday usability.
- Sport: This is the better choice if you want the strongest mix of performance and equipment. It adds the turbocharged engine, upgraded suspension hardware, leather seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and standard blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist. If you want the best-value trim with the most complete feature set, this is the one to focus on.
The Sport trim also gets the broader standard safety package, while the Base leaves some driver-assistance features optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and move quickly when you find a strong example.
- Deal availability: 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 182 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.21% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,719, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT's resale value?
The current average of $12,346 sits slightly below last year's $12,496.
That kind of softening suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against you if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, it also means you may be buying at a relatively reasonable point in the cycle if you want to hold the car for a while.
For a future seller, the key takeaway is that value retention looks steady rather than strong. If you keep the car in good condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position than a seller of a neglected example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT safe?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. The Base trim also gets a blind-spot mirror, while blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are optional on the Base and standard on the Sport. The Sport can also be equipped with forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning, but those features are not available on the Base.
A key caveat is that the Base trim leaves some of the more advanced driver-assistance features off the options list, so you’ll want to pay close attention to trim level if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 stands out as Hyundai’s most competent hatchback to date and is positioned as a credible alternative to the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus hatch, and Subaru Impreza wagon.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of practicality, value, and everyday drivability, the 2018 is the one to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market and look for a clean, well-priced example near the low end of the range, since the softer pricing trend gives you some leverage.
