CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Honda HR-V
overall

Summary
With 92 currently listed for sale near Baltimore, MD and an average price of $19,189, 37.0% of 2018 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Honda HR-V 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
91.3% of 2018 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda HR-V stands out as a small crossover that delivers big-car utility in a city-friendly package. Its appeal starts with the way it combines the footprint of a subcompact with the practicality buyers want from a crossover, making it easy to live with in tight spaces while still feeling useful for everyday errands and commuting.
Honda also gives the HR-V a few traits that help it feel more substantial than its size suggests. It is based on the Fit hatchback, but it offers higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin. The 2018 HR-V is also positioned as a less expensive alternative to the popular CR-V, which adds to its value appeal. Owners commonly praise its comfort, gas mileage, user-friendly features, interior versatility, and smooth ride, though some note sluggish acceleration and limited visibility.

The car is fantastic for its value. Loaded with neat features including remote start that wasn’t advertised! Heated cloth seats, a sun roof, side mirror camera and back up camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, eco option when driving etc. lots of trunk room and the back seats fold down as well for extra space! for me personally the car is not missing anything. It’s a major upgrade from what I had previously and it’s one of the best financial decisions I made going from an unreliable American made car make, to a reliable and trustworthy car make

I went for the FWD to get better gas mileage. It gets great economy. About 38 mpg on highway and 26 or so around the city and suburbs. Comfortable with good dashboard.

Great gas mileage, features were not over the top but dummy friendly to figure out. Handles nicely, fun to drive. I think the car is an excellent value. Wish it had arm rests, but other than that, its perfect!

Is the 2018 Honda HR-V a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Honda HR-V earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its comfort, great gas mileage, user-friendly features, interior versatility, and smooth ride. In practical terms, that lines up well with its city-friendly footprint, higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and less expensive positioning versus the CR-V. 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a reliable choice that feels dependable for daily commuting, with praise for its smooth ride and trouble-free everyday use. Honda’s own evaluation emphasizes that the HR-V is a composed, comfortable vehicle, and its practical, easy-to-live-with character supports that reputation. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-kept example matters more than ever, since neglected maintenance or hard use can quickly erode the value of a model that already leans on simplicity rather than modern hardware.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, visibility, and everyday usability, you should also pay close attention to how well the cabin, controls, and driving position have held up. A thorough test drive matters too, especially if you want to confirm that the car still feels smooth and easy to live with.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX has similar alloys in one color, while EX and EX-L trims add two-tone 17-inch wheels; only EX-L trims come with leather. The higher trims feel more upscale, but the base version is the one most likely to leave you wanting more visual polish and cabin richness.
- Powertrain: A single 1.8-liter 4-cylinder makes 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque across all trims. The front-wheel-drive LX and EX can be paired with Honda’s 6-speed manual, while all-wheel drive is optional on all trims and pairs exclusively with the CVT.
- Safety package: Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is included, and optional LaneWatch uses a camera in the right side-view mirror to show the blind spot on the central screen. Forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available.
- Infotainment: The system does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, response time is slow, and the maps are low resolution. SiriusXM and HD Radio come on the top trim, but the overall setup feels dated.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is EPA rated at between 25 and 27 mpg city and 31 and 34 mpg highway. Our AWD EX-L is rated at 27/31, and we averaged 25 mpg over 300 miles.
Which 2018 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the simpler look and fewer upscale touches. It still gives you the HR-V’s core practicality, and the standard manual transmission on FWD models is a standout if you want a more engaging drive.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more visual appeal and keeps the HR-V’s useful, easygoing character intact without pushing the price as high as the top trim.
- EX-L: This is the trim to choose if you want the most premium cabin feel, leather, and the fullest equipment set, but it makes the HR-V harder to justify versus larger alternatives.
Safety-wise, the HR-V does not offer forward-collision alert with auto-braking, which is an important trim-level limitation to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
The market looks moderate, so you can shop selectively without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,031 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,348, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $16,070 sits slightly below last year's $16,153.
That small decline suggests the HR-V is holding value in a fairly stable way rather than swinging sharply up or down. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually means you can expect steady demand if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and priced realistically. The model’s practical appeal and broad usefulness help support that stability, especially among shoppers who want a small crossover that is easy to live with.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V safe?
The HR-V earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side crash tests and four-star ratings for frontal crashes. It scored the top Good rating in four of five crash tests conducted by IIHS, with an Acceptable rating for front side overlap.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is a useful feature, and optional LaneWatch adds a camera-based view of the right-side blind spot. Even so, forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available, and the lack of forward-collision alert with auto-braking keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a city-friendly footprint, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin than you might expect from a subcompact crossover.
The bottom line: The 2018 HR-V makes sense if you want a practical, comfortable used crossover and you value steady pricing, broad utility, and strong owner satisfaction. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2018 can still be a smart buy, but you should focus on condition and history first, since the model’s value depends heavily on finding a clean example with the right equipment for your needs.
