Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In stands out as a 50-state plug-in hybrid that pairs electric driving with gas-powered range, giving it a broad everyday appeal. According to the test-drive summary, it offers 47 miles of electric driving and another 293 miles of gas-powered driving range, which helps explain why it is presented as a car that avoids range anxiety. It also brings genuine room for five people and a fairly big trunk, making it more practical than its unusual profile might suggest.
That practicality is part of what makes the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In distinctive: it is not just an efficiency-focused commuter, but a car meant to work for real passengers and cargo. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its performance, good power, quiet ride, and excellent fuel economy, especially when charging overnight. The main drawbacks mentioned are its exterior design and the size of the trunk, so while it has clear strengths in efficiency and comfort, its styling and cargo space may not satisfy everyone.

Great value..nice ride, good power and handling, overall well-designed.. .styling in the rear could use some improvement with the rear wheels. There could be a larger opening from the trunk through the fold down seats.

There are 179 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,735.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its performance, good power, and quiet ride, and they also highlight its excellent fuel economy, especially when you charge overnight. The overview also points to its five-passenger room and fairly big trunk, which makes it more practical than many efficiency-focused alternatives.
That mix makes sense if you want a plug-in hybrid that can handle electric commuting without giving up gasoline backup for longer drives. With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels reliable in daily use, with praise centered on good power, quiet operation, and excellent fuel economy that owners can count on when they charge regularly. The expert review also describes the car as delivering smooth, seamless, quiet electric motivation, which reinforces the sense of dependable everyday use.
Honda’s plug-in hybrid setup is straightforward enough to support long-term ownership, and the review notes that the car’s value proposition is especially strong for drivers who can charge at home. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is making sure the battery, charging habits, and overall condition still match the car’s efficiency-focused promise.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In?
At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or shows signs of heavy use. Focus on condition details that matter most in a plug-in hybrid: charging behavior, cabin electronics, brake feel, and whether the car still delivers the quiet, smooth driving experience owners expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Touring trim adds leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, simulated suede on the dashboard, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a navigation system that can help direct you to charging stations, and remote cabin climate pre-conditioning. The standard trim is the better value if you do not need those extras.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup combines a 17-kilowatt-hour battery, an electric motor, and a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gasoline engine for 212 horsepower. It also offers Normal, Econ, Sport, and HV driving modes, plus standard deceleration paddles.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed following, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and Road Departure Mitigation. There is no blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text-messaging support, Pandora compatibility, HondaLink services, and a multi-angle reversing camera. Touring trim adds navigation with HD traffic.
- Fuel efficiency: The car is rated at 110 MPGe in combined electric-and-gas driving and 42 mpg in combined hybrid driving. Honda says it can travel 47 miles on electricity alone and 340 total miles before refueling or recharging.
Which 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In is offered in 2 trim levels: standard and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- standard: This is the trim to target if you want the core plug-in hybrid experience without paying extra for comfort and convenience upgrades. It still gives you the same powertrain, the same standard safety suite, and the same basic efficiency story, so it is the best-value choice for most shoppers.
- Touring: This trim adds leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, simulated suede dashboard trim, an 8-way power driver’s seat, navigation that can help direct you to charging stations, and remote cabin climate pre-conditioning. Choose it if you want a more upscale cabin and more convenience features.
Honda Sensing is standard across the lineup, but you do not get blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert on either trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 179 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.17% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,735.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In's resale value?
The current average of $16,768 sits slightly below last year's $18,667.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car more attractive to you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and charging-system health than to broad market momentum alone.
The good news is that a model with strong owner satisfaction can still hold buyer interest better than a less-loved alternative. If you keep the car well maintained and preserve its efficiency advantages, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed following, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and Road Departure Mitigation. The car also uses Honda’s ACE body structure, and it includes Lane Watch for right-side blind-spot visibility.
You should note that there is no blind-spot monitoring system and no rear cross-traffic alert. The expert review also points out that Honda Sensing can occasionally behave imperfectly or trigger a warning in certain driving situations, so it is worth testing those systems carefully during your inspection drive.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- This year stands out for debuting the 50-state plug-in hybrid version with 47 miles of electric driving and 293 miles of gas-powered range.
The bottom line: The 2018 is the right pick if you want the first widely available Clarity Plug-In Hybrid with strong owner satisfaction, solid efficiency, and a market that has already softened. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can wait for a cleaner listing or a lower-mileage example, but the 2018 already looks like the safer buy if you want the plug-in hybrid formula without paying a premium.
