The midsize Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid arrived in 2018 and like most other plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) like the Hyundai Sonata PHEV, it offers an electric range and plug-in charging abilities with a gasoline engine and generator. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid carries over for 2019. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid features a streamlined, wedge-shaped body full of all sorts of aerodynamic tricks and futuristic details. Inside, the large windows, floating panels, and multitude of cubbies make it feel larger than it is. It also includes a cargo area that measures an impressive 15.5 cubic feet. Sitting beneath the hood of every Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is a high-tech powertrain with four distinct components. A 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, electric motor, continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and 17 kilowatt-hour battery work to send 212 horsepower to the front wheels. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid gets a 6.6-kWh onboard SAE charger that brings that battery to a full charge in 12 hours using a standard 110/120V wall outlet. On a 220V connection, the charging time decreases to 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, there’s no DC fast-charging option. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid will do 47 miles on just electricity. When that runs out, there’s enough fuel to get you to 340 miles before filling up or recharging. Fuel economy ratings stand at 110 miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe) in hybrid mode or 42 mpg combined only using gasoline. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid comes in either Base or Touring grades. The Base trim kicks things off with LED exterior lighting, keyless access and start, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-speaker 180-watt sound system, an electronic parking brake, and an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Touring trim tacks on leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and navigation. Honda bundles the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid with a reversing camera, a right-side camera, and its entire suite of Honda Sensing driver-assistance technologies, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and lane-keeping assist. Reversing sensors are optional. As of this writing, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid hasn't been crash tested, but that’s pretty common for low-volume PHEVs. The Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is a smart PHEV with plenty of space and features. It lets you have a useful amount of electric range without the range anxiety of needing to find a charging station once it’s depleted.
