CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 325 currently listed for sale near Columbia, SC and an average price of $31,999, 29.5% of 2018 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Ford Mustang 4.61 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
72.3% of 2018 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
With a nip here and a tuck there, plus substantial mechanical and technological improvements, the 2018 Ford Mustang aims to ensure its continued popularity. That combination is what makes this Mustang distinctive: it keeps the familiar pony-car identity while becoming more sophisticated than before, blurring the line between mainstream and premium cars as well as between muscle cars and sports cars. It also remains a benchmark in the American 2-door sports coupe segment it has dominated since 1964.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2018 Mustang is presented as a more refined and more performance-focused version of a long-established nameplate. The test-drive summary notes that its competitors are no longer limited solely to the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger when performance is considered, which underscores how broadly capable this Mustang is meant to be. Owner feedback aligns with that image, praising its power, sporty design, fast acceleration, smooth ride, and enjoyable driving experience.
There are some tradeoffs, though. Owners have pointed to limited trunk space and discrepancies in vehicle specifications, so the car’s strengths are not matched by complete practicality. Even so, the 2018 Ford Mustang stands out as a stylish, fun, and affordable muscle car with enough polish to feel more upscale than its roots might suggest.

This is a driver’s car. Base model, performance package, standard shift. It’s got all the right parts and it is exactly the car I would have ordered if I were there to purchase this car when it was new.

First the color Kona Blue is beautiful especially in the sunlight. Ride is smooth and comfortable. I love that you change to sport mode. And your comfort or sport for steering. Love it! Inexpensive muscle car.

Very good value. Car is missing nothing. I would compare it to a corvette.

Engine sounds good. Interior has lots of cigarette burns. Front bumper cover was repainted, could have done a better job on the clear coat. Scratch down the passenger side quarter panel. Would have bought for cash if price was a little bit lower.

| Year-Round High | $23,746 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,358 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.49% |

Is the 2018 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.61/5, and experts give it 8.33/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its power, sporty design, fast acceleration, smooth ride, and enjoyable driving experience. That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a refined, performance-focused pony car that still keeps its familiar identity while feeling more sophisticated than before. For you, that means the Mustang makes the most sense if you want a stylish, fun-to-drive coupe or convertible with broad appeal rather than a purely practical commuter.
With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market opportunity to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.61/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels fun, stylish, and affordable, with many drivers appreciating its enjoyable driving experience over time. The expert notes also emphasize the Mustang’s improved sophistication and strong performance, which supports the idea that it’s built to be a car you can count on for repeat enjoyment. Ford’s added refinement and technology upgrades help the car feel more mature than earlier versions.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the car’s character and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been abused or modified heavily.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Mustang?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has performance upgrades or a long list of options. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of hard use, and whether the equipment matches the listing description. Because this model can be bought in very different configurations, the condition and equipment level matter a lot.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin and feature set vary meaningfully by trim, and Premium models add higher-quality materials, exposed contrast stitching, and a more upscale feel. If you’re comparing cars, the feature gap at the lower trims is worth checking closely.
- Powertrain: You can shop this Mustang with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or a V8, and the V8 brings 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The 10-speed automatic adds adaptive shift logic and paddle shifters, while the manual includes a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel.
- Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. The lane-keeping assist can be intrusive, but it can be switched off.
- Infotainment: You get Sync 3, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Ford Sync Connect, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system also includes Track Apps and enhanced digital performance displays.
- Fuel efficiency: The V8-powered GT is rated at 19 miles per gallon in combined driving.
Which 2018 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2018 Ford Mustang is offered in 2 trim levels: EcoBoost and GT.
Here's the short version:
- EcoBoost: This is the best-value choice if you want the Mustang look and driving experience without paying for V8 power. The cost-effectiveness case is especially strong here, and it’s the trim the expert points to as the real value play.
- GT: Choose this if you want the full performance character of the Mustang. It adds the 5.0-liter V8, much stronger output, and the kind of hardware that makes the car feel genuinely special on a winding road or track day.
The safety package includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,960 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,242, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $22,543 sits slightly below last year's $23,358.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may also mean future resale gains are more limited unless the car is especially well kept. If you buy at the right price and maintain the car carefully, you’ll be better positioned to protect value later. Strong condition and desirable equipment should matter more than ever if you plan to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.61/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2018 Mustang earns an Acceptable rating from IIHS for small-overlap frontal-impact protection and Good ratings in other crash-test assessments. It also earns a five-star rating for rollover resistance from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. The lane-keeping assist can detract from driving enjoyment, but you can turn it off. The IIHS had not yet tested the car with the new driver-assistance technologies at the time of the review.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.61/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 update brings substantial mechanical and technological improvements, including a more sophisticated feel, stronger performance, and added driver-assistance tech.
The bottom line: If you want the most refined version of this generation’s Mustang without moving to a newer model year, the 2018 is the one to target. It’s the better choice for shoppers who value updated tech, stronger performance, and a more polished driving experience. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2018’s improvements make it the more compelling pick for most buyers.
