Why it stands out
The 2018 Ford Fusion stands out for the sheer variety in its lineup. It is a family sedan that offers an extraordinary amount of choice, and it remains one of the better midsize cars you can buy even though it hasn’t been completely redesigned in more than half a decade.
That breadth is the Fusion’s biggest appeal. The lineup ranges from a basic but stylish car to hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, and it also includes an undeniably luxurious sedan and a genuine sports sedan. For shoppers who want a midsize sedan with a wide spread of personalities and price points, the 2018 Ford Fusion is unusually flexible.

I love this car, nice gas mileage and the mid to upper class models have tons of features suitable for the whole family. The only downside that I have found is at the dealership - high prices, although you really only get what you pay for!

Its expert evaluation also points to a car that remains satisfying to live with, especially because it benefits from modern infotainment and a broad range of configurations.
The performance notes are encouraging for durability-minded shoppers too: the car is described as quick, capable of strong passing power, and able to handle spirited driving without losing composure. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well, especially if it was driven hard or equipped with the more complex performance hardware.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Fusion?
At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim or performance-oriented example. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and driving behavior match its mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the basic S to the SE, Titanium, and Platinum, with the Sport sitting above them as the performance model. The base trim is described as stylish but also as using inexpensive hard plastic, so you should pay close attention to material quality and equipment gaps if you’re shopping the lower end of the range.
- Powertrain: The Fusion is available with a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, and a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 in the Sport. Hybrid versions are rated at 42 mpg in combined driving, and plug-in hybrid versions deliver 97 MPGe with about 20 miles of electric range.
- Safety package: Ford includes a broad set of safety, driver-assistance, and collision-avoidance features, and the car can be equipped with optional inflatable rear seat belts. The safety content also notes that better headlights and more easily accessible child safety seat anchors would be welcome.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 is the key system to look for, and it supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Sync Connect with FordPass, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Siri Eyes Free, audible text messaging, and 911 Assist. It can also be paired with a Sony premium sound system and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid versions are rated at 42 mpg in combined driving, and the plug-in hybrid versions are rated at 97 MPGe. The Sport test car returned 20.6 mpg on a test loop and requires 93-octane fuel.
Which 2018 Ford Fusion trim should I buy?
The 2018 Ford Fusion is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium, and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Fusion’s styling and core sedan appeal at the lowest price. It’s the trim where you should be most alert to the simpler cabin materials and fewer features.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it sits in the sweet spot between price and equipment. The content specifically points to the SE with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and AWD as a rewarding all-weather daily driver.
- Titanium: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It adds a more luxurious flavor and is a good fit if comfort and features matter more than keeping the budget tight.
- Platinum: This is the choice if you want the most luxurious version of the standard lineup. It’s the trim to consider when you want the Fusion to feel as close to a premium sedan as possible.
The safety content notes that Ford offers the usual range of safety and driver-assistance features, with optional inflatable rear seat belts available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Fusion?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,772 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,647, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Fusion's resale value?
The current average of $11,804 sits slightly below last year's $12,670.
That price movement suggests the Fusion has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number today. If you keep the car in good condition and avoid overpaying up front, you’re starting from a more favorable base than a year ago.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Ford Fusion safe?
The 2018 Fusion performs beautifully in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety assessments, including the new front passenger’s side small overlap frontal impact test, but it earns a three-star crash protection rating for the front passenger from NHTSA and top marks in the other federal tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford offers a broad safety and driver-assistance package, and the car can be equipped with optional inflatable rear seat belts. The safety evaluation also flags two weaknesses: the headlights could be better, and the child safety seat anchors could be easier to access.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Fusion or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 Fusion stands out for its unusually broad lineup, ranging from a basic sedan to hybrid, plug-in hybrid, luxury-leaning, and sports-sedan versions.
The bottom line: If you want a used midsize sedan with lots of personality choices, the 2018 Fusion is a strong pick because it gives you more variety than many rivals and now sits at a softer price point. If you’re mainly shopping on value, the 2018 is especially appealing when you find a clean, well-kept example with the equipment you want; if you’re more price-sensitive, you can widen your search to nearby years and compare condition and mileage closely.
