CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Ford Expedition
overall

Summary
With 2,062 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,924, 32.0% of 2018 Ford Expeditions for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Ford Expedition 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
71.3% of 2018 Expedition models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Ford Expedition stands out as a completely redesigned full-size SUV that is presented as the best mainstream-brand choice in its class. Its appeal starts with the basics buyers expect from a large SUV: more interior room, greater comfort, superior cargo space, and significantly more towing capacity. Those strengths make it especially well suited to families and anyone who needs a vehicle that can handle full-size SUV duties without feeling compromised.
It is also notable for how broadly it covers the needs of large-SUV shoppers. The available owner feedback reinforces the same themes, pointing to spaciousness, power, and comfort as major positives, along with good fuel economy for a vehicle of this size and a generous feature set. The main cautions are more practical than dramatic: some owners mention high repair costs and steering feel with larger rims, so the Expedition’s strengths in space and capability come with the expectation of potentially higher ownership costs.

I am extremely happy with the truck it is more than I expected. Had a 2012 Lincoln Navigator that I thought was nice , this one is even nicer. It has things I keep on finding different things it comes with this will be the last one that I will ever buy.

Overall the vehicle is great for my needs, it has more features than I need but they are very nice. It would be comparable to a Chevrolet suburban.

Very happy with this vehicle so far. Plenty of room for my kiddos and great on fuel mileage.

Comfortability ten out of ten, appealing 100%, specious for families, traveling, shopping, and carrying midsize items. Fuel economy is good since the engine is six cylinder rather than eight cylinder and regular gasoline 87 octane can be used compared to other luxury SUVs that require premium gasoline.

Is the 2018 Ford Expedition a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Ford Expedition earns a 4.73/5 user rating, and our experts give it an 8.5/10 overall rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and comfort, and they also point to good fuel economy for a large SUV plus a generous feature set. That lines up with the Expedition’s role as a full-size SUV built for families and for buyers who need serious towing, cargo, and passenger space without giving up everyday comfort. At 32.4% good or great deals, the market still offers some room for value-minded shoppers.
Is the 2018 Ford Expedition reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a dependable-feeling package with spaciousness, comfort, and power as recurring strengths, along with praise for the vehicle’s overall usefulness over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes robust power delivery and a composed, confident driving experience that supports the impression of a truck-based SUV you can count on for regular family duty.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some listings may come with higher repair costs, so a careful pre-purchase inspection matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Expedition?
At 71.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair. Because this is a large, feature-rich SUV, it also makes sense to focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and driver-assistance systems are working. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as mileage and price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard-length version and the Expedition MAX differ in cargo space and overall length, and the MAX adds an extra foot of length plus additional cargo room behind the third row. The XLT, Limited, and Platinum trims are the consumer-facing choices, while the XL is aimed at fleet buyers. The Limited and Platinum trims add more upscale details, and Platinum brings a more ornate grille and larger wheels.
- Powertrain: The Expedition uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and Platinum trim adds 25 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission and multiple driving modes help the SUV feel responsive, and maximum towing capacity reaches 9,300 pounds.
- Safety package: Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist are available. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and MyKey are also part of the safety story, though some of these systems are available rather than standard.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 uses an 8-inch display and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Sync Connect services. Wireless device charging, a 360-degree surround-view camera system, navigation, and a premium sound system are available, and the system also supports a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 18.3 mpg on the review loop.
Which 2018 Ford Expedition trim should I buy?
The 2018 Ford Expedition is offered in 4 trim levels: XL, XLT, Limited, and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This trim is mentioned as a basic fleet-oriented version, so it makes sense only if you’re shopping for the most utilitarian setup and don’t need the consumer-focused equipment found higher up the range.
- XLT: This is the entry point for everyday buyers and the best-value starting point if you want the Expedition’s core space, power, and capability without paying for the more upscale trims.
- Limited: This is the sweet spot for many shoppers because it adds a more premium feel while still staying below Platinum pricing. It’s the trim that best balances comfort, features, and value if you want a well-equipped family SUV.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want the most upscale Expedition experience, including the extra power bump and the more distinctive exterior and interior presentation.
Safety content also notes that many driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems were bundled with Package 301 on the reviewed vehicle, so check carefully which features are included on any listing you consider.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Expedition?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,058 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Expedition's resale value?
The current average of $19,947 sits slightly below last year's $22,604.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to preserve value than someone who pays near the top of the range. The Expedition’s broad appeal as a family-focused full-size SUV should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Ford Expedition safe?
The 2018 Ford Expedition had not been subjected to crash tests as this review was written.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford equips it with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a reversing camera, MyKey, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and SOS emergency calling through Sync 3 services. Some of those systems are available rather than standard, so you should verify equipment on the specific listing you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 stands out as a completely redesigned full-size SUV with more interior room, greater comfort, superior cargo space, and significantly more towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Expedition’s strongest mix of space, comfort, towing ability, and modern features, the 2018 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and look for a well-kept example near the low end of the range, but the 2018’s redesign makes it the better primary choice for most used-SUV buyers.
