Why it stands out
The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a roomy midsize sedan that had already been substantially modernized by the time this model year arrived. Its sleek styling and larger footprint gave it a more open-feeling back seat, while the cabin was generally praised for being easy to live with and more refined than earlier Malibus. It also offered a broad spread of trims and powertrains, including a hybrid, which helped it appeal to buyers looking for a practical family car with a little more flexibility than the average sedan.
For 2018, the Malibu’s standard engine was a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rated at 30 mpg combined. Buyers who wanted more power could choose the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic, while the hybrid combined a 1.8-liter four-cylinder and a 76-kW electric motor for 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and an EPA combined rating of 46 mpg. The car also offered a useful set of available safety and driver-assistance features, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on its infotainment system, which added to its everyday appeal.
The tradeoff is that the Malibu was not quite as refined as some of its best-known rivals, and the standard engine was described as lackluster in acceleration. Still, this generation had the best reliability record among front-wheel-drive Malibus, and that combination of decent value, strong fuel economy, and a comfortable cabin makes the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu an appealing used-car choice for shoppers who want a sensible sedan without paying premium-brand prices.

The premier One of the NICEST vehicles I’ve ever driven. Coming from someone who’s previously owned a Mercedes S600. The quality for the price point is insane on the Malibu premier. It floats like a cloud at highway speeds, has extremely comfortable heated and cooled leather seats, and the air system is top notch. To top everything off, the Malibu Premier is one of the absolute quickest sedans under 40k if not the quickest. 0-100 yesterday. Need to pass someone on the highway? Done in a split second and you didn’t even spill a drop of your open coffee in the cup holder. After driving one, I CANNOT see how people settle for base models, or even worse, something as junk as a Kia or Hyundai instead of opting for a nice quality sedan. Spend your money wisely and get a Malibu premier.

How much does the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,719 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,577 |
| Year-Round High | $12,220 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,198 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.93% |
Prices have softened 3.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,751 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, impressive fuel economy, and easy-to-live-with cabin, and many also like the ride quality and quick acceleration. It fits well if you want a roomy midsize sedan with practical everyday appeal and a more refined feel than earlier Malibus. With 26.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value in the market.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a reliable, dependable, and trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on comfort and efficiency rather than recurring complaints. That kind of response suggests the car can be a sensible long-term choice if you prioritize steady daily use over excitement. For used buyers, the main risk is less about reputation and more about making sure a specific example has been maintained well over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear that could hint at past repairs. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, because a well-kept car is the best way to reduce used-car risk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Malibu?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,751 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.93% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,577, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $11,719 sits slightly below last year's $12,198.
That price movement suggests the Malibu has softened enough to help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance records organized, you can help protect your exit value. Strong condition matters here because shoppers in this segment often compare several similar sedans side by side.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,652, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $11,719 average.
- It offers a well-rounded family-car feel with modern design and useful tech.
The bottom line:
You should lean toward the 2018 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and availability. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2017 is the better value-oriented alternative, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
