CarGurus Analysis: 2018 BMW M3

Summary
With 170 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,057, 35.9% of 2018 BMW M3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW M3 4.83 / 5 stars.
61.8% of 2018 BMW M3 listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW M3 stands out as a high-performance sedan that still manages to be practical enough for everyday use. It comes from the fifth-generation M3, which made the model a four-door sedan only, and it pairs a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. BMW rated that setup at 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, and the torque delivery across much of the rev range makes the car feel more accessible in daily driving than older, higher-strung M3s.
For 2018, BMW gave the M3 an iDrive 6.0 update, which helped make the infotainment system more desirable and easier to use. The car also benefits from the M3’s traditional strengths: rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox for enthusiasts, and the kind of performance that still makes it a serious driver’s car. At the same time, it is not the most spacious or inexpensive choice in its class, and the steering drew criticism for its electric-assist feel. Even so, the 2018 BMW M3 remains appealing for buyers who want a sedan that blends speed, everyday usability, and a strong enthusiast focus.

Comparing with the e92 m3 competition I have: The car I own is a 2018 M3 with competition pack and executive pack and all the options. Black on red spec. This car looks more aggressive. It has more tech, it looks more nicer and modern. It doesnt feel much faster to he honest. The steering feels wider, I have to turn the steering wheel a lot more for the car to really turn. I almost clipped my front end corner of my car because how wide the the car turns as compared to my e92 m3. The e92 m3 feels more like a drivers car. Unlike the f80, the e92 m3 feels instant power and it feels like you go faster and faster. The transmission also feels more aggressive and it really smacks you to the seat on every gear change. The f80 just doesnt feel that way. I love hearing the loud screaming v8, it sounds and feels like it just loves to Rev. It wants to push its limits. The f80 doesnt feel that way, I also dont know how to feel about the fake engine noise in the interior when you rev it out. You want to hear the actual exhaust note but the car forces you to listen to this artificial BS. Its too loud as well. Its a more beautiful car, but the whole driving dynamics is not as good as the e92 m3.

This M3 was so incredibly clean and like new and more than worth the premium price with low mileage and a perfect pre-inspection. I just drove it home from Detroit to Louisville and loved every minute of it.

Reviewers describe it as powerful, comfortable, and refined, and those are the kinds of traits that often support confidence over time. The owner feedback also points to a car that feels smooth and well-equipped, which matters when you plan to keep a performance sedan for years. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you start with a well-kept example, since performance cars can be costly if prior care was inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW M3?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows performance sedans. Focus on condition details that matter most on a used M3, including signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and evidence of hard use. Because this model can attract enthusiast ownership, it is worth being especially careful about maintenance records and overall mechanical condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW M3?

- Price trend: Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2018 BMW M3's resale value?
The current average of $55,038 sits slightly above last year's $53,324.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The price trend also shows that demand has remained steady enough to push values higher rather than soften. If you plan to sell later, a clean history and strong maintenance record should matter a lot in preserving your return.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 BMW M3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of everyday usability, enthusiast appeal, and current market support, the 2018 is the primary year to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still compare nearby years to see whether a cleaner or cheaper example offers better value, but you should keep the 2018 high on your list because it combines solid owner satisfaction with a market that still shows demand.
