How much does the 2018 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 12.17% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,354 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare on price and condition.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a 4.95/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10. Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features, while the overview also frames this model year as a more frugal choice thanks to the 530e plug-in hybrid. That mix makes it appealing if you want a luxury midsize sedan that leans toward comfort and efficiency without giving up premium feel. With 37.0% of listings priced as good or great deals, there’s also meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.95/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The user feedback also points to a car that feels smooth, powerful, and luxurious, with many owners recommending it for comfort and handling. At the same time, some drivers mention concerns about engine noise and potential reliability issues, so you should treat maintenance history and prior ownership care as important parts of your search. For used buyers, that means the long-term ownership risk is manageable, but only if you verify condition and service records before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior damage or a complicated option history. Pay close attention to how the car drives, whether the hybrid system behaves smoothly, and whether the luxury features work as intended. Condition matters a lot here because the 5 Series can be optioned heavily, and repairs on premium equipment can add up quickly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 530e differs only slightly from the gasoline-powered 5 Series, with eDrive badging, a charging port on the front fender, ambient lighting in BMW blue, and a flush LED gauge cluster. It also gives up some practicality, including reduced trunk space and a smaller fuel tank, so you should weigh the efficiency gains against those compromises.
• Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup is the key draw here, pairing strong torque with a traditional automatic transmission that still shifts like a regular car. It delivers 72 MPGe when charged, 29 mpg combined when the battery is depleted, and about 16 miles of all-electric driving.
• Safety package: The car includes a driver-assistance setup with blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related features, but some of those items are tied to optional packages rather than standard equipment.
• Infotainment: The iDrive system includes additional eDrive pages, and Apple CarPlay is available, though it was treated as an extra-cost feature. Wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and enhanced connectivity were also part of an optional package.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530e is rated at 72 MPGe and 29 mpg combined, with a claimed electric-only range of about 16 miles.

Which 2018 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is offered in 1 trim level: 530e.

Here's the short version:

The 530e: This is the trim to focus on if you want the lowest-priced 5 Series in the lineup and the strongest efficiency story. It adds the plug-in hybrid drivetrain, delivers the best cost-effectiveness in the range, and still feels quick and refined. If you want the best value, this is the one to target, especially if you can find a well-kept example with the right options. Safety equipment can be expanded through optional packages, so check carefully for the driver-assistance content you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,354 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,148, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $18,162 sits slightly below last year's $20,677.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the upside is that a lower purchase price can reduce the amount of value you stand to lose over time. The downside is that resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has the desirable equipment buyers want in a premium sedan. Well-kept examples with strong efficiency and luxury appeal should remain easier to move than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.95/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content points to a strong driver-assistance story, with blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related features available through optional packages. That said, some of the most useful technology is not standard on every car, so you should confirm exactly which safety package a used example has before you buy. The strong crash-test results are a major plus, but the trim and option mix still matter if you want the fullest protection and convenience set.

Should I buy a 2018 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.95/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 530e plug-in hybrid makes this year notable for adding frugality to the 5 Series lineup.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $17,260, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $18,162 average.
• It’s a full redesign with a fresh chassis, new engines, and updated technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better blend of value, efficiency, and market availability, the 2018 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable giving up the newer year’s plug-in-hybrid angle, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly alternative.
