How much does the 2018 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 11.21% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,356 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a 4.95/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features. The model also fits buyers who want a refined, comfortable midsize luxury sport sedan with an efficiency-minded plug-in option. In market terms, 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.95/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features, while also noting some concerns about engine noise and potential reliability issues. The plug-in hybrid setup adds complexity, but the car is presented as a strong choice for buyers who want comfort and efficiency in the same package. BMW also frames the 530e as a lower-priced way into the 5 Series, which can help reduce ownership strain if you value fuel savings.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a more complex hybrid luxury sedan can be costlier to keep in top shape if maintenance history is weak.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the car has any accident history or visible wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the hybrid and luxury features work as intended. Because this model can be optioned heavily, you should also confirm that the equipment on the car you’re considering matches what you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 530e differs only slightly from the gasoline-powered 5 Series, with eDrive badging, a charging port on the front fender, blue ambient lighting, and a flush LED gauge cluster. It also gives up some practicality, with trunk capacity reduced from 19 cubic feet to 15 and fuel-tank capacity reduced from 18 gallons to 12.
• Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup pairs a twin-scroll turbo 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor and a traditional automatic transmission. It delivers 310 lb-ft of torque, 72 MPGe with a topped-off battery, 29 mpg combined when the battery is depleted, and up to 16 miles of all-electric driving.
• Safety package: The car can be equipped with driver-assistance packages that add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related safety tech. Some of these features are optional rather than standard, so verify the exact equipment on the car you’re shopping.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses BMW’s iDrive interface with eDrive pages, and Apple CarPlay is available. Wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and enhanced connectivity can also appear with the right package.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530e is rated at 72 MPGe and 29 mpg combined, which is a major part of its appeal if you want luxury without frequent gas stops.

Which 2018 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is offered in 1 trim level: 530e.

Here's the short version:

The 530e is the trim to focus on if you want the lowest-priced path into this model year and value efficiency as much as luxury. It stands out for its plug-in hybrid setup, strong torque, and lower running costs, while still delivering the smooth, refined character that owners like. It’s also the best-value choice here because the model’s cost-effectiveness score is at the top of the scale.

BMW’s safety package is available with additional driver-assistance features, so make sure the car you choose has the equipment you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,356 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,151, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $18,348 sits slightly below last year's $20,665.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the key question is whether the car’s condition and equipment help it stand out when you eventually list it. Well-kept examples with strong features and clean history should be easier to move than cars with accident records or missing maintenance documentation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.95/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a 5-star safety rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW’s safety content also notes that the car can be equipped with driver-assistance packages, and those packages add features such as blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related safety tech. Some of that equipment is optional, so you should verify exactly what’s installed on the used car you’re considering. The safety writeup also points out a 124-foot stopping distance with the optional M Sport Brakes.

Should I buy a 2018 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.95/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving you a lower-priced, efficiency-focused entry point into the 5 Series.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $16,968, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $18,348 average.
• The 2017 is a redesigned, all-new sedan with a fresh chassis and new engines.

The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition and the plug-in hybrid option, the 2018 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is worth a look, especially if you find a clean example with the equipment you want.
