How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 4.40% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,104 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Generally — 4/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts point to a strong all-around used-luxury-sedan choice. The 2017 model is described as thoroughly redesigned, with a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and lighter high-strength materials that helped it grow without gaining weight. It’s aimed at you if you want a larger luxury sedan that still leans toward driving enjoyment and efficiency rather than pure softness.

The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

The market shows 37.4% good and great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 5 Series is presented as a well-built, balanced sedan with a sorted suspension, a capable transmission, and strong engine choices. The expert notes also emphasize that the new engines increase power without increasing consumption, and the car’s lighter chassis helps preserve the brand’s driving character. On the cost side, the base setup is straightforward, but the options list can quickly push the car into much pricier territory.

The performance notes also point to a smooth, well-matched 8-speed automatic and a turbocharged four-cylinder that is praised as one of the best engines in its class. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that heavily optioned examples can be more expensive to maintain and keep satisfying over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with a long option list or signs of heavy use. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment still works as intended, since this model can be loaded with expensive features. If you’re comparing multiple listings, pay close attention to how the car was equipped and whether the asking price matches its condition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 530i is the value-oriented choice, while the 540i adds a stronger six-cylinder and the M550i brings the top-end V8 performance. The base car is the one most likely to feel stripped compared with the pricier trims, so check whether the features you want are actually present.
• Powertrain: You can shop a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a turbo inline-six, or a twin-turbo V8. The four-cylinder is praised for strong torque and efficiency, while the six-cylinder and V8 deliver much quicker acceleration.
• Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of these systems are optional, so verify what the specific car includes.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses the sixth generation of iDrive, with touchscreen, rotary dial, steering-wheel inputs, and console controls. Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for a 27 mpg combined rating.

Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the best-value choice if you want the redesigned chassis, the strong turbo four-cylinder, and the core luxury-sedan experience without jumping deep into the options list. It gives you the most accessible entry point into the lineup.
• 540i: Choose this if you want a clear step up in power from the four-cylinder and expect the car to feel quicker and more effortless in daily driving.
• M550i: Pick this if you want the top performance model and are willing to pay for the twin-turbo V8’s much stronger acceleration.

The safety content says the car earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating and top scores of Good in all tests.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,104 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.40% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,721, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $16,968 sits slightly below last year's $17,750.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you own one, a clean history and strong equipment list should help protect value better than a heavily used or poorly documented example. Well-kept cars with desirable features are more likely to attract attention when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, with Good scores in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of these systems are optional, so you should confirm the exact equipment on any used listing.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly redesigned model with a lighter chassis, new engines, and a much improved iDrive system.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,348, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,968 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid option that broadens the lineup and emphasizes efficiency.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2017 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong expert and owner scores. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-year option with a plug-in hybrid choice, the 2018 is the better path.
