User feedback points to a car that feels luxurious, comfortable, and easy to live with, while also highlighting strong value and a smooth driving experience. The expert notes also frame it as a vehicle that can serve buyers who want a safe, well-built sedan they can trust for family use. What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volvo S90?

At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and any signs that the cabin electronics or driver-assistance systems have been repaired or altered. Because this sedan is positioned as a premium cruiser, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is richly finished with supple leather, matte-finish walnut wood, polished aluminum trim, beveled metal accents, and ambient lighting, but the test car’s loaded specification also shows how much equipment can separate a well-optioned example from a more basic one.
• Powertrain: The S90 uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with both turbocharging and supercharging, making 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, and the expert notes that it feels quick and can return 24.2 mpg over a week of driving.
• Safety package: Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and the car also includes free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert notes, however, that Pilot Assist was not consistently dependable in real-world testing.
• Infotainment: The Sensus system uses a vertically oriented touchscreen that is easy to understand but can be distracting while driving. The car also offers digital instrumentation with four display themes and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert recorded 22.3 mpg on a test loop and 24.2 mpg over a full week of driving.

Which 2017 Volvo S90 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volvo S90 is offered in 1 trim level: S90 T6.

Here's the short version:

The S90 T6: This is the trim described in the test-drive data, and it’s the one that shows off the model’s core strengths: strong power, standard all-wheel drive, a richly finished cabin, and a long list of technology and safety features. If you want the full S90 experience, this is the trim to focus on.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that Pilot Assist comes standard, but the expert found it inconsistent in real-world use.

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.13% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $15,556, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volvo S90's resale value?

The current average of $15,556 sits slightly below last year's $16,397.

That price movement suggests the S90 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may reduce the amount of value left to lose before resale. The model’s premium positioning and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, but resale will still depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2017 Volvo S90 receives the highest possible IIHS ratings, with the exception of headlight performance, which is deemed Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo makes safety a central part of the S90’s appeal, and every car comes standard with Pilot Assist plus free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert’s testing, though, found that Pilot Assist could be inconsistent and not always dependable in situations where you’d want it to help most. The Marginal headlight result is the main caveat to keep in mind if you drive often at night.

Should I buy a 2017 Volvo S90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert says the S90 has what it takes to succeed as Volvo’s flagship sedan, with standout styling and a strong mix of luxury, safety, and value.

The bottom line: The 2017 S90 makes the most sense if you want a distinctive luxury sedan with strong owner approval, a lower current price than a year ago, and enough inventory to shop selectively. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the current market gives you room to wait for a cleaner or better-equipped example, but the best cars are still worth moving on quickly.
