Owners consistently praise its luxurious features, smooth handling, comfort, and strong value. The S90 also fits your needs well if you want a refined cruiser with distinctive styling and a premium cabin, though the limited leg and headroom noted by owners may matter if you prioritize space.

With 39.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still enough market opportunity to find a compelling example.

Is the 2017 Volvo S90 reliable?

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its strong value, comfort, and the kind of ownership experience that makes it easy to count on. The expert notes also frame it as a vehicle that can serve as a safe family choice with meaningful long-term appeal.

If you’re shopping used, the main ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that still feels tight, refined, and free of wear-related issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volvo S90?

At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the S90’s appeal depends heavily on its premium feel, you’ll also want to focus on cabin condition, electronics behavior, and whether the car still drives as smoothly as it should.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is richly finished with supple leather, matte-finish walnut wood, polished aluminum trim, beveled metal accents, and ambient lighting, but the test car’s heavily optioned setup shows that some of the most appealing touches may not be present on every example.
• Powertrain: The S90 uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with both turbocharging and supercharging, paired with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It’s quick, can tow up to 4,600 pounds, and offers Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual drive modes.
• Safety package: Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The system is not always satisfying to use, so you should verify that all driver-assistance features work properly.
• Infotainment: The vertically oriented Sensus touchscreen is easy to understand when parked, but it can be distracting on the move. It includes drag-and-drop screen customization, digital instrumentation with four display themes, and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The test car returned 24.2 mpg over a full week, and the expert notes cite an official EPA estimate of 25 mpg.

Which 2017 Volvo S90 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volvo S90 is offered in 1 trim level: T6.

Here's the short version:

The T6: This is the trim described in the test-drive data, and it’s the one that shows off the S90’s core strengths: striking design, a richly trimmed cabin, strong acceleration, and a premium overall feel. If you want the S90 for its style, comfort, and flagship presence, this is the version to focus on.

The safety package includes Pilot Assist as standard, but the expert notes suggest you should test it carefully and not assume it will fully handle every situation for you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volvo S90?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make shopping worthwhile if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 39.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 164 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,332, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volvo S90's resale value?

The current average of $15,332 sits slightly below last year's $16,168.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against a future seller if prices continue to soften. If you buy now, your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volvo S90 safe?

The 2017 Volvo S90 receives the highest possible ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with the exception of headlight performance, which is deemed Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, along with free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert notes also make clear that Pilot Assist should be treated as a helpful aid rather than something you can count on to consistently manage dangerous situations for you.

The main caveat is the Marginal headlight result, so if you drive often at night, that’s worth keeping in mind when you evaluate a used example.

Should I buy a 2017 Volvo S90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• The expert summary says the S90 replaces the S80 as Volvo’s flagship sedan and has what it takes to succeed.

The bottom line: The 2017 S90 makes sense if you want the flagship styling, premium cabin, and strong value story that define this model year. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can shop carefully and focus on the best-maintained examples, but the 2017 is already positioned as the year to buy when you want the S90’s design and luxury appeal without paying new-car money.
