Owner feedback points to a car that feels luxurious, comfortable, and a great value, while also describing it as a nice cruiser. The expert notes also frame it as a safe, family-friendly choice with meaningful value baked in.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volvo S90?

At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Pay close attention to bodywork quality, panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and any signs that the car has been repaired after damage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S90’s cabin is described as richly finished, with supple leather, matte-finish walnut wood, polished aluminum trim, beveled metal accents, and ambient lighting. The test car also had optional 20-inch wheels, which helped it stand out but may not reflect every listing’s equipment.
• Powertrain: The S90 uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with both turbocharging and supercharging, paired with an 8-speed automatic. The expert notes say it is quick, with all-wheel-driven acceleration and selectable drive modes including Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual.
• Safety package: Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert notes also say the system could not be counted on to consistently assist the driver in potentially dangerous situations.
• Infotainment: The Sensus system uses a vertically oriented touchscreen that is easy to understand but can be distracting and slow to respond. The car also offers digital instrumentation with four display themes and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 22.3 mpg, and the car returned 24.2 mpg over a full week of driving. Volvo also says the S90 T6 can tow up to 4,600 pounds.

Which 2017 Volvo S90 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volvo S90 is offered in 1 trim level: S90 T6.

Here's the short version:

The S90 T6: This is the trim described in the test-drive notes, and it brings the S90’s core appeal: bold styling, a richly trimmed cabin, strong power from the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter engine, and standard Pilot Assist. It suits you best if you want the S90’s design and luxury-first personality in its fully featured form.

The safety package note is important here: Pilot Assist is standard, but the expert found it inconsistent in real-world use.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volvo S90?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 168 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.11% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,502, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volvo S90's resale value?

The current average of $15,502 sits slightly below last year's $16,338.

That price movement suggests the S90 has softened in the used market, which can be good for you as a buyer but less favorable if you plan to resell soon. A lower current average can also mean future resale gains may depend more on condition, mileage, and maintenance history than on broad market momentum.

Because the model has a meaningful share of accident-free listings and a strong owner satisfaction score, well-kept examples should remain easier to sell than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volvo S90 safe?

The 2017 Volvo S90 receives the highest possible ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with the exception of headlight performance, which is deemed Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert notes also say the system could not be counted on to consistently assist the driver in potentially dangerous situations.

That headlight caveat is worth keeping in mind if you drive often at night, and you should treat the driver-assistance tech as a helpful feature rather than something you can rely on completely.

Should I buy a 2017 Volvo S90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says the S90 is positioned to battle midsize luxury sedans and has what it takes to succeed.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, style, and available inventory, the 2017 is a sensible place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the cleanest, best-documented examples and be ready to move quickly when you find one below the current average.
