Summary
With 793 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,328.00, 29.0% of 2017 Volkswagen Jettas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta 4.82 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
For the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta, the biggest story is a modest but meaningful reshuffling in its final year of the sixth generation. Volkswagen slimmed the trim lineup, expanded the availability of safety systems, and made a reversing camera standard across the range. That gives this Jetta a more appealing mix of simplicity and everyday usefulness, especially for buyers who want a straightforward compact sedan with some added peace of mind.
It also stands out because it was still carrying the same basic generation the U.S. had seen since 2011, even as a new Jetta had already arrived in Europe in 2015. Volkswagen treated 2017 as a bridge year before the next generation, so the car’s appeal comes less from a full redesign and more from the way it was updated to stay relevant. Owners’ impressions line up with that character: they praise its smooth ride, excellent fuel economy, sporty handling, and strong value, while some note that the cabin can feel cramped and wish for more features such as automatic lights and a heated steering wheel.

Yes — with a 4.82/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating, the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta lands as a strong pick for shoppers who want a straightforward compact sedan. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, excellent fuel economy, and sporty handling. They also describe it as fun to drive and a strong value for the money. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Jetta’s role as an everyday compact sedan that balances comfort, efficiency, and usefulness.
Only 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful comparison shopping.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?
Owners rate it 4.82/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with drivers highlighting its smooth ride, excellent fuel economy, and strong value over time. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize that Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter turbo is peppy, torquey, and able to deliver its advertised efficiency numbers, which supports the impression of a car you can count on for daily use.
The ownership picture is still best approached with a used-car mindset: you should expect the usual age-related wear checks and make sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Jetta?
At 49.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition, equipment operation, and signs of neglect rather than assuming every example is the same. Because this model year mixes strong value with a wide spread in listing quality, the best cars are the ones with clean records and well-kept interiors.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes LED daytime running lights, fog lights, heated side mirrors, a reversing camera, air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and full power accessories, but it also comes with 16-inch steel wheels, a 4-speaker stereo, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The SE adds pleather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, a 6.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Powertrain: The 1.4-liter turbo is peppy and torquey, with 28 mpg city, 38 highway, 32 combined. The 1.8-liter raises output but drops efficiency to 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 29 combined. The 2.0-liter turbo brings the most power, but fuel economy falls to 27 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.
- Safety package: The SE adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the SEL adds forward-collision warning with auto braking and adaptive cruise. The Sport trim deletes advanced safety systems, and the GLI deletes adaptive cruise and forward-collision warning even though it adds parking sensors.
- Infotainment: The SE’s 6.3-inch touchscreen adds VW App-Connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base S trim’s 5-inch screen and 4-speaker stereo are much more basic, while the SEL adds navigation and an upgraded 6-speaker stereo.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city, 38 highway, 32 combined. The 1.8-liter returns 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 29 combined. The 2.0-liter returns 27 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, Sport, SEL, GLI.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S trim gives you a lot for the money, but it still feels entry-level with a 4-speaker stereo, a 5-inch touchscreen, and steel wheels. It’s the one to choose if you want the lowest-cost path and can live without the richer tech and safety content higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best all-around value because it adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, keyless entry and ignition, and a sunroof. It also keeps the Jetta’s everyday-friendly character while fixing many of the base trim’s compromises.
- Premium/top trim: The SEL is the most complete choice if you want the strongest mix of comfort, tech, and safety. It adds forward-collision warning with auto braking, adaptive cruise, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and upgraded materials.
- Off-road trim: The GLI is the least compelling daily-driver choice if you care about safety tech, because it deletes adaptive cruise and forward-collision warning even though it adds performance hardware.
The SE and SEL are the trims that best balance value and equipment, while the Sport and GLI make more sense only if you have a specific performance focus.

If you find a listing below $9,875.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?
The current average of $10,336 sits slightly below last year's $10,649.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than on broad market momentum alone. Well-equipped examples with clean histories should hold buyer interest better than neglected or stripped-down cars.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta safe?
It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a five-star rating in all other NHTSA tests, and the IIHS awarded it top marks.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Jetta’s safety story is strongest on the equipment side. Standard features include a reversing camera, and higher trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with auto braking, and adaptive cruise. The Sport trim deletes advanced safety systems, and the GLI also drops adaptive cruise and forward-collision warning, so trim choice matters if safety tech is a priority.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Volkswagen updated the lineup with more standard safety equipment and a reversing camera across the range.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,418, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,336 average.
- It adds a new 1.4-liter turbo and modernizes the car with better efficiency and a new touchscreen.
The bottom line: If you want the most updated version of this generation, the 2017 is the better target because it brings more standard safety and a cleaner trim strategy. If your main goal is saving money, the 2016 is worth a look because it can cost less while still delivering the core Jetta strengths.
