overall

Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack stands out as Volkswagen’s take on a familiar formula: a station wagon with all-wheel drive, SUV styling cues, and a slightly raised suspension. That combination gives it a practical shape for daily driving while adding a more adventurous look and capability than a conventional wagon. It is also described as a German Subaru Outback, but with a more engaging driving character.
What makes the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack appealing is that it blends usefulness with driving enjoyment. The available owner feedback points to impressive handling, a comfortable interior, and a fun driving experience, along with appreciation for its all-wheel drive capability and the option of a manual transmission. At the same time, some drivers have noted concerns about the tires and the lack of certain safety features such as blind spot detection, so it is not without compromises.

Amazing traction, beautiful interior, good German engineering. Great value. Doesnt have sensors for cars getting too close or blind spot detection

For my purposes, the Golf Alltrack is a near perfect vehicle. It is not gross and large, yet its interior room is greater than many SUVs. The handling is responsive and sure. While there was no means of testing the Alltrack capabilities, I would assume that it would meet situations of snow with great aplomb. The acceleration and driving characteristics were excellent. Fit and finish both inside and out were equally superb. Unless you absolutely NEED an offroad vehicle (and exactly how often are you really going to use that offroad potential that you were seduced into buying?) I cannot imagine a better or more practical vehicle. The car is a good value. For those who want an automatic transmission, it is available. I would place the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack far ahead of the Subaru offerings in both handling, acceleration and fit and finish.

Hard to find an all wheel drive wagon with a manual transmission. A blast to drive.

Actually fun to drive. Steering firms up nicely in custom setting. Though it leans in the twisties it doesnt feel tippy, tracks through with virtually no understeer. Avoid ludicrous speed setting in custom. No mechanical issues. With the DSG transmission(SE & SEL), beats the snot out of the Outback. Avoid oem tires, probs with SE delaminating Continentals, Falkens are just terrible in all respects. once switched to Michelin Pilot A/S performance is way enhanced. VW killed the GOLF at least for US. Im certain the make more $ on the Tiguan, which is the entry soccer mom model. May buy another to keep in CO. For us (both the SE & SEL-yup two) we have keepers ie 125-50k.

| Year-Round Low | $12,898 |
| Year-Round High | $13,721 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,724 |

There are 197 listings available, which suggests a modest but workable pool of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its impressive handling, comfortable interior, and fun driving experience. The available owner feedback also highlights its all-wheel drive capability and the option of a manual transmission. In practical terms, that lines up well with its role as a wagon that gives you daily usefulness with a more engaging feel than many crossovers.
There are 32.0% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as dependable and fun to live with, and the feedback points to a car people feel good about keeping for the long haul. The expert review also frames it as a tried-and-true formula that is practical, fuel-efficient, safe, and affordable, which supports the case for everyday dependability.
Volkswagen also includes automatic post-collision braking as standard, and the available safety and service subscription adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and speed and boundary alerts. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that Volkswagen products can carry more reliability uncertainty than some rivals, so a careful inspection and service-history review matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the suspension, tires, and underbody, since the Alltrack’s raised wagon setup is meant for more adventurous use but still has limits. You should also pay close attention to the availability of safety equipment, because some useful driver-assistance features are not on every version.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S is the base model and starts with the core AWD setup and raised ride height, while the SE adds a panoramic sunroof, premium sound system, keyless entry with push-button start, and automatic rain-sensing wipers. The SEL adds the most comprehensive infotainment system, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: A turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The broad torque curve and available DSG transmission with paddle shifters and Sport mode are tuned more for enjoyable everyday driving than outright speed.
- Safety package: Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions. The SEL is also available with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable.
- Infotainment: The SEL gets Volkswagen’s Discover Media system with smartphone projection, satellite radio and data services, Car-Net apps and subscription services, and navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the system also includes an Off-road Monitor.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the Alltrack returned 24.8 mpg on a testing loop and averaged 26 mpg over a week, while the EPA figure cited is 25 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Alltrack’s core appeal: AWD, the raised wagon body, and the adventurous look without extra frills. It makes sense if you want the basic formula at the lowest price.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, keyless entry with push-button start, and rain-sensing wipers while keeping the same overall character. If you want more comfort and convenience without jumping to the top trim, this is the one to target.
- SEL: This is the most fully equipped version, with the top infotainment system, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels. It also unlocks the available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist system, so it suits you if you want the most features and the strongest tech package.
The SEL is the only trim with the available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 197 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,898, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack's resale value?
The current average of $13,354 sits slightly below last year's $13,724.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop near the lower end of the range, you reduce the amount of value left to lose over time. The market also appears reasonably active, which can help when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack safe?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack earns top scores from the federal government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips it with automatic post-collision braking as standard, and all versions also get adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. The SEL is the only trim with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. One important caveat is that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable, so you should not assume every useful driver-assistance feature is included.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review describes it as a practical, fun-to-drive, fuel-efficient, safe, and affordable wagon with just enough off-road capability for extra adventure.
The bottom line: If you want the Alltrack’s blend of wagon utility, AWD, and engaging driving character, the 2017 is a strong buy when priced well and backed by clean history. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on the lower end of the market range and prioritize a well-documented example over chasing the highest trim.
