CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Prius
Summary
With 512 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,533, 32.6% of 2017 Toyota Prius listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Prius 5 / 5 stars.
57.2% of 2017 Toyota Prius listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Prius stands out as a used hybrid that blends excellent fuel efficiency with a strong reputation for reliability. In the fourth-generation Prius, Toyota focused on meaningful improvements in fuel efficiency, performance, and design, while also stiffening the body structure and upgrading the suspension for better handling and ride comfort. The exterior was made more aerodynamic, and some models could achieve up to 56 combined mpg. Inside, the cabin gained better materials, newer tech, and comfortable front seats, while most examples include a touchscreen infotainment system, a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist.
For buyers, the 2017 Toyota Prius is appealing because it delivers the core Prius strengths in a more refined package than earlier versions. It also benefits from Toyota’s long-standing reputation for durability, and the fourth-generation model is available with all-wheel drive on models from 2019 onward, though that does not apply to the 2017 model year. One drawback is that hybrid components can raise repair costs, and some models lack power. Even so, the 2017 Prius remains a practical choice for shoppers who want a dependable hybrid with strong efficiency and everyday usability.

Is the 2017 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its amazing gas mileage, smooth ride, and great value, and many also like the abundance of features. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a practical daily commuter with efficiency and everyday usability. Is the 2017 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback highlights reliability-adjacent strengths such as great value, smooth everyday driving, and the kind of ownership experience that keeps commuters happy over time. The overview also emphasizes Toyota’s reputation for durability, which supports the Prius’s appeal as a dependable used hybrid. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that hybrid components can raise repair costs, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Prius?
At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on every candidate and pay close attention to any prior collision records, title issues, or repeated repairs. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on hybrid-system condition, overall mechanical health, and signs of uneven wear or poor repair work. Because this model is often bought for efficiency and commuting, make sure the car still feels tight, quiet, and well maintained in everyday driving.

The current average of $16,595 sits slightly above last year's $16,233.
That modest increase suggests the market still values this model year, especially for shoppers who want a fuel-efficient hybrid with broad appeal. If prices keep holding near the current level, that can support stronger resale performance for owners who buy well and maintain the car carefully. The combination of steady demand and a recognizable nameplate helps keep this Prius relevant in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.23% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $15,260, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $16,595 average.
- It offers familiar hybrid appeal with a freshened fourth-generation design.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall market signal, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines strong owner satisfaction with solid demand and a still-reasonable price range. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in clean condition with a solid history.
