Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback is a standout choice in the crossover segment, combining practicality with a rugged design that appeals to outdoor enthusiasts. Its spacious interior and advanced safety features make it a family-friendly option, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) capability ensures confidence in various driving conditions. Owners appreciate the comfortable ride and reliability, although some have noted that the engine, particularly the 2.5L version, can feel underpowered. The Outback's reputation for safety is bolstered by its EyeSight suite of driver-assist technologies, which have been a hallmark of Subaru's commitment to innovation. While the continuously variable transmission (CVT) may not be to everyone's taste, the Outback remains a popular choice for those seeking a versatile vehicle that can handle both daily commutes and weekend adventures.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

2017 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,635 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,092.45 |
| Year-Round High | $15,355.26 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,359 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.71% |
Prices have softened 4.71% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,075 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $14,092.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 4.65/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, spacious interior, and AWD capability, and they also value the comfortable ride. For you, that makes this a strong fit if you want a practical crossover for daily commuting, family use, and weekend trips. With 31.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability as a recurring strength, along with a dependable feel and confidence for varied driving conditions. That matters if you want a used vehicle you can count on for regular use and longer ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear or hidden issues do not outweigh the model’s strong reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can screen for accidents, title issues, and major repairs. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your condition check on the drivetrain, interior wear, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard or maintained inconsistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,075 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,092.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,635 sits slightly below last year's $15,359.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter even more because buyers tend to reward clean, well-kept examples. Strong demand for practical, well-liked vehicles can help support value, but your exact resale outcome will depend on mileage, condition, and accident history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,668, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,635 average.
- It emphasizes practicality, safety, and off-road capability.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,270, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,635 average.
- It adds a quieter cabin and improved driving dynamics.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2017 if you want a balanced mix of owner satisfaction, current market softness, and broad shopping inventory. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value-oriented path; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling experience, the 2018 is the stronger upgrade path.
