Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy wagon-crossover with standard all-wheel drive and a reputation for strong all-weather capability. By this generation, Subaru had already moved the Outback firmly toward crossover territory, and the model’s appeal rested on its combination of space, ground clearance, and a comfortable, refined ride. It also benefited from Subaru’s long-running focus on safety technology, which helped make the Outback a familiar choice for buyers who wanted utility without giving up everyday drivability.
For this generation, the Outback offered a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, while the available 3.6R Limited used a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine with 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. AWD was standard, as was a continuously variable transmission with a six-speed manual shift mode, and Subaru’s extra-sensitive X-Mode terrain system was also standard. The cabin was comfortable and capacious, with a little more back seat space than before, though the droney CVT and modest fuel mileage were common complaints. Buyers also had to weigh the fact that higher trims carried more equipment, while the base setup was more basic.
The 2017 model year also benefited from the broader sixth-generation Outback’s technology and safety strengths. Available equipment included an 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Subaru’s EyeSight suite, a driver-distraction warning system, high-beam assist, and a front-view camera. That mix of capability, safety features, and everyday usefulness is what makes the 2017 Subaru Outback distinctive, even if some shoppers may still find its powertrain less engaging than rivals.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Outback earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, spacious interior, reliability, comfortable ride, and AWD capability. That fits especially well if you want a practical, roomy wagon-crossover for everyday driving and all-weather use. With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, along with dependable all-weather performance and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers. That combination matters if you want a used vehicle you can count on for commuting, family duty, and seasonal driving. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history should carry real weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs.

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,267 sits slightly below last year's $14,911.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale may depend heavily on how well you preserve the vehicle. If you keep mileage reasonable, maintain it well, and choose a clean-history example, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell. The current market also suggests buyers remain interested in this model, which helps support demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

- At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.32% compared with last year.

Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,802, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,267 average.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the best fit if you want a well-liked, practical Outback with strong owner satisfaction and a market that still offers deal opportunities. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value path; if you want to spend more for a newer alternative, the 2018 is worth a look.
