CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Crosstrek
Summary
With 1,586 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,752, 34.1% of 2017 Subaru Crosstrek listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek 4.88 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Crosstrek stands out as a compact crossover that blends everyday practicality with Subaru’s familiar all-weather formula. It offers generous ground clearance, protective body cladding, and a sturdy pedestal-style roof rack, giving it a rugged look and useful capability without moving up to a larger SUV. It is also small inside but exceptionally practical, with seating for four, five if absolutely necessary, and between 22.3 and 51.9 cu-ft of cargo space.
What makes the 2017 model appealing is its straightforward, easy-to-live-with character. It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 148 horsepower, and the available CVT creates a lot more noise than forward momentum, so acceleration is not its strong suit. Even so, the Crosstrek is fun to toss around on dirt roads and for tackling moderately challenging trails, and it remains a sensible choice for buyers who value utility, safety, and fuel efficiency over speed. For the first-generation’s final model year, it was available as a special edition in black or red paint colors, and a lane-change assist function arrived for models with blind-spot detection.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek on Apr 19, 2023
The car is very new for me, and Ive driven only about 250 miles so far, but so far I am happy because the car is both capable and has some personality. Mine is crystal white with black leather interior and I love the appearance. It makes me feel happy to walk up to it in the parking lot because it is really cute, and the interior is also attractive. The orange stitching on the seats give the interior a little style; the navigation is bright and clear; and the moonroof keeps it feeling open and airy inside; and the interior is overall logical. The handling is excellent. Ive driven in snow on roads where some cars are sliding and my car was driving along just fine. I havent had issues with acceleration and have been driving 65 mph on the highway without problems. The gas mileage seems quite good and the gas tank seems to be big enough as I still have half a tank of gas after going about 250 miles. The Eyesight and other safety features also give me a feeling of security. Visibility is also great. There are just a few negatives that Ive noticed so far. The biggest negative Ive noticed is that the bottom cushion of the drivers seat is too hard. The back of the seat and headrest are actually very comfortable so its really just the bottom. I also wish that the seat could be adjusted electrically instead of manually. The other thing that I would change is the placement of the buttons for the seat warmers. When driving, I have to reach behind and feel around to try to find it or look back for it. Other than the padding in the bottom of the seat, the lack of electric adjustment to the seat and the placement of the heat seater button, I really am happy with this beautiful and capable car. 7/6/17 Update: I continue to be very happy with my car. I love driving it. I like the adaptive cruise control on the highway as well as the little beeper that lets me know if the car in front of me moves when waiting at a traffic light for a while. The seats even became much more comfortable after a few months of use. I have, however, had a few issues with the connection to Audible on my iphone dropping and I really dont know why this happens. Overall, though, very happy with my car and would buy the exact same car if I were to do it again!

We did purchase this car 2 weeks ago. So far so good. Comfortable and easy on gas. It’s all about the reliability with a Subaru, so fingers crossed we can get a few years out of this cross trek.

How much does the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,745 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,716 |
| Year-Round High | $14,576 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,575 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.69% |
Prices have softened 5.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,580 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 4.88/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, smooth handling, ride comfort, reliability, and fuel efficiency, which fits a compact crossover built for everyday use. The Crosstrek’s practical size, useful cargo space, and all-weather character make it especially appealing if you want a small SUV-like vehicle that’s easy to live with. With 35.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable, dependable, and a vehicle they can count on for everyday driving. The feedback also points to trouble-free ownership and strong long-term appeal, especially for buyers who value efficiency and consistency over speed. For used buyers, that suggests lower ownership risk if you verify condition and maintenance history before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, including signs of body repair, interior wear, and how the car drives, because those details matter more when you’re shopping a model with mixed history in the market.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,580 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,716, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $13,745 sits slightly below last year's $14,575.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy a well-kept example at a sensible price so depreciation has less room to work against you. Strong condition and clean history should matter more than chasing a bargain trim or color.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,513, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,745 average.
- It adds useful safety tech and a fresher look.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,846, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $13,745 average.
- It brings a full redesign with a more refined take on the formula.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and shopping flexibility, the 2017 is the primary pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want the newer redesign and can spend more, the 2018 is the upgrade path.
