2017 RAM 2500 test drive
overall
The 2017 Ram 2500 is a modern truck, ready for far more than towing and hauling.
These days, trucks get asked to do more than ever. They have to be capable of all sorts of use and abuse at the worksite, but also serve as the family hauler. So trucks are getting more and more comfortable while retaining (and building upon) the capability that defines them.
Enter the 2017 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty. It is far more than a simple work truck, and that’s because it has to be. Ford and Chevy provide stiff competition when it comes to the worksite. As such, Ram has to offer its 2500 in a plethora of trims and offer plenty of unique features and creature comforts to make it an attractive option. The result is a truck that is not only great to drive and live with every day, but powerful and functional enough to live up to its “Heavy Duty” billing.

The truck I drove rode rough, and there was definitely something wrong with the steering. The truck has been worked hard and it shows. It would be a good truck for construction but not for a family.

Is the 2017 RAM 2500 a good car?
Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The expert rating is 8/10, and the standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the powerful performance, modern and comfortable interior, and user-friendly features. They also highlight reliability and towing capability, which fits a truck that is meant to work hard while still serving as a daily driver and family hauler.
With the 2017 Ram 2500’s broad trim range and heavy-duty mission, you get a truck that can be tailored to worksite duty or more comfortable everyday use. The market also shows 24.9% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the truck’s heavy-duty capability and its ability to remain comfortable and functional in daily use.
The 2017 Ram 2500’s powertrains and chassis are built for demanding work, but used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history, steering feel, and ride quality on the specific truck you’re considering.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 RAM 2500?
At 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean trucks from those with prior damage or repeated use in hard-duty environments. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension, steering, brakes, and any towing-related wear, since this model is often used for demanding jobs. It also makes sense to focus on cabin condition and feature operation, because higher-trim trucks can carry expensive equipment that you’ll want to verify works properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the work-focused Tradesman with plain vinyl bench seats, a basic LCD-screen radio, steel wheels, and plastic bumpers to the Limited with a unique grille design, full leather interior, remote start, and Ram Box cargo management. The SLT adds a 5-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, chrome bumpers, a mini trip computer, and SiriusXM, while the Big Horn adds fog lights, a power driver’s seat, backup camera, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen.
- Powertrain: You get a 5.7-liter V8 with 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, or a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel with 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque with the manual transmission and 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque with the automatic. Gas engines pair with the 6-speed automatic, while diesel buyers can choose manual or automatic.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and front and rear parking sensors are available on some versions. Large mirrors with integrated wide-angle mirrors also help with visibility.
- Infotainment: Tradesman models use a basic radio with an LCD screen, while Bluetooth is optional there and standard on every other version. SLT, Big Horn, and Power Wagon trims come with a 5-inch color touchscreen, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen is standard on the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: In testing, the Power Wagon with the 6.4-liter Hemi returned just under 12 mpg combined.
Which 2017 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?
The 2017 RAM 2500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Tradesman, SLT, Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Tradesman: This is the truck for you if you want the most work-focused setup, with vinyl bench seats, a basic LCD-screen radio, steel wheels, and plastic bumpers. It makes the most sense if you care more about utility than comfort.
- SLT: This is the value-oriented step up, adding a 5-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, chrome bumpers, a mini trip computer, and SiriusXM. If you want a better everyday experience without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
- Big Horn: This trim adds fog lights, a power driver’s seat, a backup camera, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. It’s a strong middle-ground choice if you want a more complete feature set.
- Laramie: This is the comfort-focused upgrade, with plenty of chrome plus heated and ventilated front seats and front and rear parking sensors. It suits you if you want a more upscale truck for regular driving.
- Laramie Longhorn: This trim sits above Laramie and is part of the more premium end of the lineup, with the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen standard. It’s a good fit if you want a richer cabin and more luxury-oriented presentation.
- Limited: This is the top trim, with a unique grille design, full leather interior, remote start, and Ram Box cargo management. Choose it if you want the most fully equipped version and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the reversing camera remains optional, so that’s worth checking on any truck you consider.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 RAM 2500?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient and compare condition closely.
- Deal availability: 24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,236 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,325.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 RAM 2500's resale value?
The current average of $31,187 sits slightly below last year's $31,832.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck has been maintained. Heavy-duty trucks can hold buyer interest when they’re clean and well cared for, but prior use and wear matter a lot in this segment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 RAM 2500 safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and front and rear parking sensors are available on some versions. The large mirrors with integrated wide-angle mirrors also help visibility in traffic and tight spaces.
One caveat is that the reversing camera is not standard, so you’ll want to confirm whether the truck you’re considering has it. That matters more on a heavy-duty pickup where visibility and maneuvering can be challenging.
Should I buy a 2017 RAM 2500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Ram 2500 stands out as a heavy-duty truck that is meant to do more than just tow and haul, while still serving as a family hauler.
The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck that balances capability, comfort, and broad trim choice, the 2017 Ram 2500 is a strong used-buy candidate. If you’re especially price-sensitive or want newer tech like standard backup camera integration and smartphone connectivity, a later model year may be worth considering instead.
