There are 2,498 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2017 RAM 2500 a good car?

Yes — the 2017 RAM 2500 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the powerful performance, comfortable interior, user-friendly features, reliability, and towing capability. That lines up well with the truck’s role as a heavy-duty model that can handle worksite demands while still serving as a family hauler.

With its broad trim range and mix of comfort and utility, it fits you best if you want a truck that feels more livable than a bare-bones work vehicle. 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 RAM 2500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability, dependable performance, and a truck that owners feel they can count on for towing and everyday use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Ram 2500’s durable, capable character, with strong performance and the kind of heavy-duty hardware that supports long-term ownership.

The main used-buyer risk is that some trucks may have been worked hard, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot more than mileage alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 RAM 2500?

At 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence that the truck spent its life towing or hauling. Because this model is often bought for demanding jobs, condition can vary widely from one listing to the next. Pay extra attention to how the truck drives, how the steering feels, and whether the cabin and suspension show signs of heavy use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from the work-focused Tradesman to the well-equipped Limited, with the SLT adding a 5-inch touchscreen and sliding rear window, the Big Horn adding fog lights, a power driver’s seat, backup camera, and an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen, and the Laramie adding heated and ventilated front seats plus front and rear parking sensors. The Tradesman is the most stripped-down choice, so you should expect fewer comfort and convenience features there.
• Powertrain: Standard gas power comes from a 5.7-liter V8 with 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, while a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 makes 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. A 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel is also available, with output depending on transmission choice, and the truck can be paired with either a 6-speed automatic or, with the diesel, a 6-speed manual.
• Safety package: The Ram 2500 comes standard with front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and front and rear parking sensors are available on some trims.
• Infotainment: The Tradesman uses a basic LCD-screen radio, while Bluetooth is optional there and standard on every other version. SLT, Big Horn, and Power Wagon trims come with a 5-inch color touchscreen, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen is standard on the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. There’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet.
• Fuel efficiency: In testing, the Power Wagon with the 6.4-liter Hemi returned just under 12 mpg combined.

Which 2017 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?

The 2017 RAM 2500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Tradesman, SLT, Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Tradesman: This is the work-first choice, with vinyl bench seats, a basic LCD-screen radio, steel wheels, and plastic bumpers. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost entry point and do not need much in the way of comfort features.
• SLT: This is the value-oriented step up, adding cloth seats, chrome bumpers, a mini trip computer, a one-year SiriusXM subscription, a 5-inch touchscreen, and a sliding rear window. It is the best-value trim if you want a more usable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Big Horn: This trim adds fog lights, a power driver’s seat, a backup camera, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. It is a smart pick if you want a better mix of convenience and tech.
• Laramie: This is the comfort-focused upgrade, with plenty of chrome plus heated and ventilated front seats and front and rear parking sensors. It suits you if you want a more upscale cabin and easier parking.
• Laramie Longhorn: This trim is part of the upper end of the lineup and builds on the more luxurious direction of the truck. It is for buyers who want a more premium-feeling heavy-duty pickup.
• Limited: This is the top trim, with a unique grille design, full leather interior, remote start, Ram Box cargo management, and lots of chrome. It is the right choice if you want the most feature-rich version.

Safety-wise, the Ram 2500 comes standard with front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control, while a reversing camera remains optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 RAM 2500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,498 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.60% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,323, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 RAM 2500's resale value?

The current average of $30,561 sits slightly below last year's $32,035.

That decline suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also mean slower appreciation if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this truck’s value is being supported more by capability and demand than by rising prices.

If you keep the truck in strong condition and maintain it well, you improve your odds of holding value better than average. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 RAM 2500 safe?

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Ram 2500 comes standard with front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and front and rear parking sensors are available on some trims, which helps with maneuvering a large truck.

The main safety caveat is that the camera is not standard, so you should pay close attention to visibility equipment when comparing listings. The large mirrors with integrated wide-angle mirrors help, but they do not replace a full camera setup.

Should I buy a 2017 RAM 2500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 Ram 2500 stands out as a heavy-duty truck that is meant to do more than tow and haul, with a broad trim range and plenty of comfort features.

The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want a heavy-duty truck that balances capability with comfort and you can find one with clean history and the right equipment. If you are especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for lower-mileage or better-maintained alternatives and compare condition closely, since used heavy-duty trucks can vary a lot from one listing to the next.
