Overview

Though basic even for a subcompact sedan, the 5-passenger Nissan Versa does have its share of redeeming qualities, not the least of which is a starting MSRP that will again have the Scrooges of the world dancing in the streets. Other redeeming qualities in this ultra-affordable 4-door include the roomiest rear seating in the segment, an impressive 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, and a surprisingly comfortable ride.
Nissan has announced no changes for the upcoming year’s Versa lineup, so expect the 2017 version to again come in 4 trims: the S, S Plus, SV, and the flagship SL. All editions offer front-wheel drive (FWD) only, and lower trims have a distinctly low-end feel both inside and out.
The Versa, which debuted for the 2007 model year, last underwent a refresh for 2015. Upgrades included reworked exterior styling, a more upscale interior look, and upgraded cabin amenities like standard Bluetooth hands-free calling (which came on all trims). Now well into its second generation, the Versa, as well as its Versa Note hatchback sibling, won’t ever be plush, but it remains an almost perfect first new car. The Versa Note, by the way, is covered in a separate overview.
Powering this pint-size 4-door is a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with three different transmissions. The entry-level S trim is delivered with a standard 5-speed manual transmission, while a 4-speed automatic transmission comes optional. All other trims feature a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that, though clunky, is the most fuel efficient.
Look for all trims boasting the CVT to get an EPA-estimated 31 mpg city/40 highway/35 combined, while a Versa S toting the 5-speed stick-shift gets 27/36/30, and the S with the 4-speed automatic is estimated at 26/35/30. One track test had the Versa going from 0 to 60 in 10.4 seconds, around a half-second slower than most rivals.
Nissan offers the Versa S with distinctly spartan features, for which there is no apology, since its starting price is lower than many similarly sized and equipped used vehicles. Move up to the higher trims and the bling factor rises exponentially, as does the MSRP. Costlier trims boast such standard features as a rear-view camera, power-adjustable outside mirrors, a rear spoiler, and satellite radio, while NissanConnect destination downloads and phone apps also come standard on the SL. The Versa's touted value means a number of glaring omissions, including a tilt-only steering wheel, little in the way of cabin soundproofing, and, in the S, no split-folding rear seatbacks. But, as a positive, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with an integrated remote garage door opener is optional on all trims, including the base S.
Standard safety features aboard the Versa include the usual array of government-mandated equipment, such as front and front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head curtain airbags, and traction and stability control. Look, also, for front disc and rear drum antilock brakes (ABS). Higher Versa trims add standard front fog/driving lights, turn-signal-integrated mirrors, and a remote antitheft alarm to the list, with the SL also tossing in Nissan’s unique Easy-Fill tire-inflation alert system, which interfaces with the tire-pressure monitor when you’re inflating the tires and beeps the horn as an indication that the proper psi has been reached.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the current Versa its second-highest score of 4 stars overall in crashworthiness testing, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards it a best score of Good on all tests except for the small-overlap frontal offset, in which the Versa scored a worst-possible Poor. The IIHS also gave its second-highest score of Acceptable for the Versa's LATCH child-seat anchoring system’s ease of use.
Challengers to the Versa, all of which offer better performance and features, as well as a higher price tag, include the Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Sonic, Scion iA, Hyundai Accent, and Kia Rio.

My 2017 Versa SV is fun to drive, dependable, has enough power for me (if I want 0-60 in 7 seconds I will drive my other car), and it gets incredible gas mileage. Comfortable, nice inside, roomy, good ride, handles well. I cant believe I bought it new for only $19,500 out the door including taxes etc. I also like the way it looks. It is a cleaner smoother design than the new Versas. Kind of reminds me of a modern strectched version of the old VW beetle. I plan to keep it until it falls apart, which will probably be 40 years from now or more.

I got the Versa S and it’s as basic as it gets besides A/C and power steering. Bought it as a commuter car only and it does exactly that. In the city / rural road driving I’m averaging 38 mpg. Feels reliable as can be every time it starts up. I’m sure they have better packages to improve comfort and accessory options but this car fits all of my needs. Definitely a value vehicle with MPG and reliability in front of mind.

Love this car. Takes a minute to get up to speed but its great. Great on gas, roomy inside, lots of trunk space. Love the color inside and out. Excellent choice. The body is kind of compared to a Toyota Corolla. But better. Great price for a great car!!!
2017 Nissan Versa Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Nissan Versa prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Nissan Versa cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $7,272 |
| Year-Round Low | $6,996.15 |
| Year-Round High | $7,791.03 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $7,707 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.64% |
Prices have softened 5.64% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 362 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare across price and condition.
If you find a listing below $6,996.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Nissan Versa a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Nissan Versa earns a 4.88/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers commonly praise its reliable nature, comfortable ride, and great gas mileage. The spacious interior and decent features for the price also come up often, while value for money is a recurring strength.
With 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively without rushing into the first option you see.
Is the 2017 Nissan Versa reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to a reliable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting its dependable nature and comfort over time. That combination suggests it can be a sensible used-car choice if you want something you can count on for everyday driving.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a car that has been neglected or worn down by prior use, so condition matters as much as the model’s reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Versa?
At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection and pay close attention to body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear.
Because this model is often bought for value, you’ll want to focus on how well the specific car has been maintained rather than relying on price alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Versa?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 362 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.64% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $6,996.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Versa's resale value?
The current average of $7,272 sits slightly below last year's $7,707.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, which can make future resale a little more competitive for you as an owner. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of preserving value later by starting from a lower entry price.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Versa or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 Versa makes sense if you want a value-focused used car with strong owner satisfaction and enough inventory to shop carefully. If your priority is getting the lowest possible purchase price, you may also want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than the cheapest one on the lot.
