CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Pathfinder
overall

Summary
With 810 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,867, 28.0% of 2017 Nissan Pathfinders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
54.9% of 2017 Pathfinder models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder stands out as a family-focused SUV that bridges the gap between minivans and more rugged 4x4s. It is designed to handle family-hauling duty while still offering all-wheel-drive capability when needed, which gives it a broader appeal than a typical people mover. Its car-based platform also helps explain why it emphasizes space and everyday usability rather than old-school truck toughness.
What makes the Pathfinder distinctive is how far it has moved from its earlier, more rugged roots. By 2017, it was part of the fourth generation and had been completely redesigned on a platform shared with the Altima, Quest, Maxima, and others. That change allowed Nissan to maximize interior room, resulting in plenty of cargo and passenger space. For buyers, that combination of comfort, practicality, and available all-wheel drive is the Pathfinder’s main draw.
At the same time, the 2017 Pathfinder is not presented as the most rugged SUV in its class, and that is part of the tradeoff. It is less truck-like than it once was, but it can still do everything that is asked of a family hauler. Owners also tend to praise its comfort, features, spaciousness, smooth performance, and good gas mileage, though some have raised concerns about steering issues and tire wear.

Very well equipped SUV. I love the fact that it has third row seating (that actually seems quite comfortable for short trips). The gas mileage on this is great for an older full-size SUV (25 mpg avg according to tripometer). The SL and Platinum both had leather interior, which is really nice and the seats were very comfortable. A great car for traveling!

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, features, and spaciousness, especially for families. The overview also points to its broad appeal as a roomy SUV that can handle everyday family-hauling duty while still offering all-wheel-drive capability when needed. That combination makes it a practical fit if you want minivan-like usefulness without giving up SUV versatility.
With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to comfort, features, spaciousness, smooth performance, and good gas mileage, which are all traits that usually support confidence in daily use. The expert drive notes also describe it as a well-rounded family hauler that can do what’s asked of it, and the cost-effectiveness section frames it as a smart all-around choice.
That said, used buyers should still watch for steering issues and tire wear, since those concerns can affect long-term ownership costs if they show up on a specific vehicle.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?
At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven tire wear, steering feel, and any evidence that the vehicle has been repaired after an incident. A careful condition check matters here because the market includes a sizable number of vehicles with accident history.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S includes an 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, dual power outside mirrors with integrated LED cornering signals, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and three-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims add more convenience and comfort, with the SL bringing leather seating, a 360-degree camera system, heated seats, and a blind-spot warning system.
- Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower and a continuously variable transmission. It can send power to the front wheels or available all-wheel drive, and it offers 2-wheel drive, Auto, and 4WD modes along with hill-start assist and hill-descent control.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Optional safety tech includes forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen, and higher trims add navigation. The system uses redundant controls with both touchscreen and physical buttons, but it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The available information notes that the V6 and drivetrain are set up with fuel economy in mind, but no MPG figure is stated.
Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the core Pathfinder package at the lowest entry point. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, roof rails, and push-button start, so it covers the basics well without forcing you into a higher price bracket.
- SV: This trim adds useful everyday upgrades like remote start, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and backup sensors. It makes sense if you want a better-equipped Pathfinder without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- SL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a 360-degree camera system, leather seating, heated front and rear seats, a blind-spot warning system, and a motion-activated liftgate. If you want a strong mix of comfort and safety features, this is the sweet spot.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want the most upscale Pathfinder experience. It adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED projector headlights, a panoramic moonroof, navigation with real-time traffic and weather, heated and cooled front seats, wood-tone trim, forward-collision avoidance, and adaptive cruise control.
The SL and Platinum trims also bring the most meaningful safety and convenience upgrades, while the base S keeps the price lowest.

What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $10,946 sits slightly below last year's $11,530.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can make the Pathfinder easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you purchase at a strong price and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you may be better positioned than someone who pays near the top of the range. The model’s family-friendly appeal and broad usefulness should help support demand, but resale will still depend heavily on condition and history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 update brings a stronger 284-horsepower V6 and more upscale available safety and convenience features.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,545, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,946 average.
- It is practical first and emphasizes everyday usefulness over personality.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better pick because it combines updated power, solid safety, and broad family appeal. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly route, especially if you can live with a simpler, more functional feel.
