What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?

At 56.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history. Focus on signs of uneven tire wear, steering issues, and overall maintenance consistency. A clean-looking listing is not enough here; condition and documentation matter.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S includes an 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and three-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims add features like fog lights, remote start, leather trim, a 360-degree camera, heated seats, and a panoramic moonroof, so the base trim is the one most likely to feel feature-light if you want more convenience and safety tech.
• Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. It also offers a 2-wheel-drive mode for better fuel economy, Auto mode for traction, and a locked 4WD setting for rougher roads.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Higher trims can add blind-spot warning, forward-collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system.
• Infotainment: Every trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen, and higher trims add navigation with real-time traffic and weather. The system uses redundant physical controls, but it does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The available 2-wheel-drive mode is intended to help with fuel economy, and the V6/CVT setup is described as delivering good gas mileage.

Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?

The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the Pathfinder’s core space and family usefulness at the lowest entry price. You still get the standard 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and push-button start, but you give up a lot of convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. You get smart auto-on headlights, fog lights, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and backup sensors.
• SL: This is the trim to target if you want the Pathfinder to feel meaningfully more upscale and easier to live with. It adds a 360-degree camera, leather seating and door trim, heated front and rear seats, a blind-spot warning system, and a motion-activated liftgate.
• Platinum: This is the pick if you want the most equipment and the most comfort. It adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED projector headlights, a panoramic moonroof, navigation with real-time traffic and weather, heated and cooled front seats, a power tilt-telescoping steering column, forward-collision avoidance, and adaptive cruise control.

The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, where you get the most advanced driver-assistance features.

What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?

The current average of $10,610 sits slightly below last year's $11,656.

That price movement suggests the Pathfinder has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today. For a future seller, that means resale value may be steadier if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. The model’s broad family appeal should help support demand, but the market is still sensitive to mileage, condition, and accident history.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH child-seat anchors, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Higher trims add blind-spot warning, forward-collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the most advanced safety tech, you should focus on the upper trims.

Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.98% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It offers a roomy, family-focused layout with a strong safety score and useful available driver-assistance tech.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,335, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,610 average.
• It delivers a spacious interior and a smooth driving experience.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2017 is the stronger choice because it combines a lower current average price with solid owner satisfaction and strong safety credentials. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better budget path, especially if you can find one with clean history and good maintenance records.
