Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?

The Pathfinder comes with a 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which helps support early ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure steering and tire-wear concerns have not become expensive maintenance issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?

At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, tires, and suspension wear. Because some owners have raised concerns about steering issues and tire wear, condition matters more than mileage alone. A clean service record and a thorough test drive are especially valuable here.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S includes an 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and three-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment, so the base trim is the one most likely to feel light on features.
• Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. It also offers a 2-wheel-drive mode for better fuel economy, an Auto setting, and a 4WD lock mode.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and side impact airbags, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH anchors, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Higher trims add blind-spot warning, a 360-degree camera system, forward-collision-avoidance, and adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with redundant physical controls. Navigation is available on higher trims, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
• Fuel efficiency: The Pathfinder can switch to 2-wheel drive for better fuel economy, and the V6 is described as delivering good gas mileage.

Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?

The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and the core family-friendly features. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Pathfinder, though it is the least equipped.
• SV: This trim adds smart auto-on headlights, fog lights, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and backup sensors. It is the best-value choice if you want a noticeable step up in convenience without jumping too far in price.
• SL: This is the first trim that really broadens the Pathfinder’s appeal with leather seating, heated front and rear seats, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot warning, and a motion-activated liftgate. It is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale family SUV.
• Platinum: This trim adds the most luxury and tech, including a panoramic moonroof, navigation with real-time traffic and weather, heated and cooled front seats, a power tilt-telescoping steering column, forward-collision-avoidance, and adaptive cruise control. Choose it if you want the most fully equipped Pathfinder.

The safety package starts with strong standard equipment, while the higher trims add the most useful driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 791 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.69% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,565, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?

The current average of $10,565 sits slightly below last year's $11,571.

That price movement suggests the Pathfinder has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. The current market also shows enough inventory to give buyers leverage, which can make it harder for sellers to command a premium.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder safe?

The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns 5 stars in NHTSA crash testing and is a Top Safety Pick from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Optional safety tech includes forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, and IIHS rates those systems Superior.

Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.69% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 brings a stronger 284-hp V6 and a well-rounded family-hauler setup.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,085, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,565 average.
• It is a functional but forgettable family-sized crossover SUV.

The bottom line: Choose the 2017 if you want the stronger engine, better feature set, and a more compelling all-around package. If your priority is simply spending less, the 2016 can still cover family duties at a lower entry price.

How does the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder compare to the 2017 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder 7.8/10 and the 2017 Honda Pilot 7.2/10.

The Pathfinder gives you more horsepower and a lower average used price, while the Pilot offers a larger pool of listings and a slightly higher accident-free share. If you want the better value on paper, the Pathfinder stands out; if you want more market choice, the Pilot has the edge. Both are family-focused three-row SUVs, but the Pathfinder’s pricing makes it the more affordable buy.
