overall

Summary
With 609 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,140.00, 28.2% of 2017 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
49.6% of 2017 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out as a compact car that blends style, value, and driving enjoyment. For 2017, it received its first real update since this generation debuted back in 2013, with design changes inside and out and new G-Vectoring Control that made an already strong package even more appealing and fun to drive. Mazda’s reputation for stylish cars with beautiful interiors comes through here as well, and the Mazda3 is presented as a car that looks and feels more expensive than its price suggests.
It also has broad appeal because it offers plenty of features even in the base version, along with well-priced options that let buyers tailor the car to their needs and budget. Owner feedback reinforces the Mazda3’s sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. At the same time, some drivers wanted more features and systems to better match competitors, which suggests the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is especially attractive to buyers who value driving character and design over maximum equipment.

The vehicle was priced well with all the features anyone could ever need. The interior seems to be better quality than others in its class over all a good made vehicle.

When my Honda died some 10 years ago or so, I somehow stumbled upon the Mazda3 (I think it was the Car & Driver reviews), and bought one. That car is the most fabulous car in its price range that I have ever driven. I adored it. I bought a 2008 sGT, and drove it with nothing but the greatest pleasure until it gave up its life for me about a month ago. There will be no coming back from this injury, but I promise you, I am currently looking for this car, and ONLY this car, for my next car, and however many next cars I have after this one. Ne plus ultra.

This car certainly has a LOT of zip, and thats not even using the Sport Mode! Plus, it gets great mpg and has a good shot of making it to 250k miles.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 4.83/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. That lines up with the overview’s emphasis on style, value, and driving enjoyment, especially if you want a compact car that feels more premium than its price suggests. The market also shows 29.9% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully and finding strong value.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a reliable-feeling ownership experience through its sporty feel, fuel efficiency, and user-friendly technology, while also pointing to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time. The expert drive notes reinforce that sense of dependability with composed handling, smooth highway behavior, and a secure, controlled drive character. The cost-effectiveness notes also help, since the car’s fuel economy and warranty coverage support lower day-to-day ownership stress.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the car’s core appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 49.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body alignment, paint consistency, tire wear, brake feel, and any signs that the car has been repaired after damage. Because this model’s appeal depends so much on how well it drives and feels, condition matters as much as equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport includes daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system, while Touring adds heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leatherette-trimmed sport seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds the more powerful engine, LED fog lights, a rear decklid spoiler, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, a power sliding-glass moonroof, Bose audio, SiriusXM, and a full-color active driving display.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque in the lower trims, or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque in Grand Touring. Both engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, and the more powerful engine trades a bit of efficiency for stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: Smart City Brake Support, advanced blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims, while the base trim relies on core safety hardware such as multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, two USB ports, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway with the manual or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the automatic can be improved to 28/37 with the i-ELOOP package.
Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get the 2.0-liter engine, the manual or automatic transmission choice, and a solid standard equipment list, but you give up the comfort and driver-assistance upgrades found higher up the range.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features that make daily driving easier and safer, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest performance and the most upscale feel. It brings the 2.5-liter engine, Bose audio, SiriusXM, a moonroof, leather-trimmed sport seats, and the active driving display, making it the most complete version of the car.
Standard safety features are strong across the lineup, and Touring and Grand Touring add the most useful driver-assistance upgrades.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop, compare, and wait for the right listing.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 656 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 49.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,916.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $13,091 sits slightly above last year's $13,007.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you as a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern is helpful because it points to predictable demand and fewer surprises when it’s time to list. It also suggests that well-kept examples should remain relatively easy to position against comparable cars.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It has not been fully rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but it has received five-star ratings in side crash testing and four-star ratings in rollover testing. It has not yet been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, though the prior model year earned a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda’s automatic emergency braking system. The main caveat is that the car’s full crash-test picture is incomplete, so you should pay close attention to trim-level safety equipment when comparing listings.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the first real update since this generation debuted, including G-Vectoring Control and refreshed styling.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,074, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,091 average.
- It delivers engaging driving with a compact-car package that feels lively and rewarding.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of updated styling, strong owner satisfaction, and stable pricing, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is saving money and you can live with the older model year’s setup, the 2016 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative.
