overall

Summary
With 609 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,140.00, 28.2% of 2017 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out as a compact car that blends style, value, and driving enjoyment. For 2017, it received its first real update since this generation debuted back in 2013, with design changes inside and out and new G-Vectoring Control that made an already strong package even more appealing and fun to drive. Mazda’s reputation for stylish cars with beautiful interiors comes through here as well, and the Mazda3 is presented as a car that looks and feels more expensive than its price suggests.
It also has broad appeal because it offers plenty of features even in the base version, along with well-priced options that let buyers tailor the car to their needs and budget. Owner feedback reinforces the Mazda3’s sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. At the same time, some drivers wanted more features and systems to better match competitors, which suggests the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is especially attractive to buyers who value driving character and design over maximum equipment.

The vehicle was priced well with all the features anyone could ever need. The interior seems to be better quality than others in its class over all a good made vehicle.

When my Honda died some 10 years ago or so, I somehow stumbled upon the Mazda3 (I think it was the Car & Driver reviews), and bought one. That car is the most fabulous car in its price range that I have ever driven. I adored it. I bought a 2008 sGT, and drove it with nothing but the greatest pleasure until it gave up its life for me about a month ago. There will be no coming back from this injury, but I promise you, I am currently looking for this car, and ONLY this car, for my next car, and however many next cars I have after this one. Ne plus ultra.

This car certainly has a LOT of zip, and thats not even using the Sport Mode! Plus, it gets great mpg and has a good shot of making it to 250k miles.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — 4.83/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the expert score is 8.5/10.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its sporty feel, responsive acceleration, and fuel efficiency, while also calling out its stylish interior and user-friendly technology. That lines up well with the overview’s focus on driving enjoyment, value, and a cabin that feels more expensive than the price suggests.
With 24.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively even in a market that rewards quick action.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its trouble-free sporty character, fuel efficiency, and user-friendly technology. The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by describing a composed, confidence-inspiring car that stays controlled in hard cornering and steady on the highway.
The cost-effectiveness notes also help here: the car comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior maintenance and wear items have been kept up properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and repair quality. Focus on how the car drives, how the cabin equipment works, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport is well equipped with daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and Mazda Connect, while Touring adds heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped touchpoints, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque on the lower trims, while the Grand Touring uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque; both engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera; Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch full-color touchscreen, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, Mazda Connect, SiriusXM with a 4-month trial, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, two USB ports, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls; Android Auto and Apple Car Play are not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual or 28/37 with the automatic, while the 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic; the i-ELOOP package can improve the automatic 2.5-liter setup to 28/37.
Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get the 2.0-liter engine, a manual or automatic transmission, Mazda Connect, and a solid standard safety and convenience list, so it covers the basics well without pushing the budget.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features many buyers actually notice every day: heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, rain-sensing wipers, and the upgraded safety tech with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest performance and the most upscale feel. It brings the 2.5-liter engine, LED fog lights, a moonroof, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, and the upgraded Bose audio system, making it the most premium version of the lineup.
Touring and Grand Touring are the trims with the added safety package features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
It’s a seller’s market, so you should shop selectively and be ready to move when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 618 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.96% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 51.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,910.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $13,378 sits slightly above last year's $12,994.
That kind of upward movement suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy carefully. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance records organized, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell. Strong demand for well-kept examples also matters here, especially because shoppers seem to respond to the car’s style and driving character.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It has received five-star ratings in side crash testing and four-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking.
The main caveat is that it has not been fully rated by NHTSA, and it has not yet been tested by IIHS for this model year. Prior-year results were strong, but you should still pay close attention to the condition and completeness of the safety equipment on any used example.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.96% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s 2017 update added G-Vectoring Control and refreshed styling, which sharpened the car’s appeal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $11,994, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,378 average.
- It delivers engaging driving feel without making the ride harsh.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded pick, the 2017 is the stronger choice because it adds the update that improves the car’s appeal while still delivering the style, efficiency, and driving enjoyment that make the Mazda3 stand out. If your priority is saving money and you can live without the newer update, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path.
