CarGurus Analysis: 2017 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 72 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,372, 18.1% of 2017 MINI Cooper listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 MINI Cooper 4.75 / 5 stars.
87.5% of 2017 MINI Cooper listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 MINI Cooper stands out because it delivers the brand’s signature mix of retro style and playful handling in a small, premium-feeling package. It is part of the third generation, which brought a turbocharged three-cylinder engine to the Cooper lineup and made the car larger than the second-generation model while adding a four-door variant. Even so, it remains compact, with tight rear seats and restricted cargo space, especially in the Convertible. Up front, though, there is enough room for taller occupants, and the car’s go-kart-like character is a major part of its appeal.
For 2017, the standard engine is a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 134 horsepower, while the Cooper S is rated at 189 horsepower. The cabin centers on an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen surrounded by a light ring that changes color with drive modes, and it includes Apple CarPlay and navigation, though both were added-cost options. Android Auto is not available. Buyers drawn to the 2017 MINI Cooper are usually looking for something fun and distinctive rather than maximally practical, and this model delivers that personality well. Its main drawbacks are the limited interior space, the extra cost of many features, and a reliability record that has not always been strong.

Nice little run around car with plenty of zip and fun to drive. I’ve only had it a week but everything seems fine and in good shape. 38 mpg on the hwy at 70 -75 mph. Love it so far!

This car is outstanding. Most fun I have ever had driving. So responsive, tight ride...almost drives itself. Like a racehorse who just wants to run. Sporty, expensive exterior, sleek interior. great sound system. Recommend without reservation. Compared to my 2012 Mini- there is no comparison. Rides and feels like a much more expensive car.

A well put together little car. Fantastic handling, it grips the road like it owes it money. Economical to run around in and when it’s time to play, the sport mode stiffens up the suspension, steering and throttle response for a good supply of adrenaline! A mini is one of the best inventions I’ve come across.

Is the 2017 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many owners enjoy living with over time, especially for its dependable-feeling driving character, fuel efficiency, and overall enjoyment behind the wheel. That said, the model’s reliability reputation has not always been strong, so you should treat condition and maintenance history as especially important on the used market. For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is buying a neglected example rather than one that has been well cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a car with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of past bodywork so you can avoid a used example that looks good on the surface but may carry hidden issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
This is a moderate market for buyers, so you can be selective without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 387 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,388, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $12,812 sits slightly below last year's $13,768.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests resale values have eased compared with a year ago. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept example with strong documentation should hold up better than one with accident history or visible wear. The model’s distinctive styling and strong owner satisfaction can help sustain demand, but condition will matter a lot when it is time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, personality, and current market softness, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a cleaner or better-equipped example fits your budget more comfortably, but the 2017 already gives you a compelling balance of buyer appeal and pricing.
